Dragoncon has canceled the Tolkien track. Terrible!

And I've heard that the Whedon'verse track has been canceled as well.

Hi everyone:
As I said before I am working on a series of vlogs on youtube.  Every year I like to do a series of episodes at Dragon Con.  I have been promoting my blogs on twitter and facebook.  I am also starting to promote them on this communities because it revolves around the above.   So here is a link to my latest information on Dragon Con.

Hey everyone,

As a lot of you remember, a few months back I posted about this photography project that I'm going to be starting at D*C this year. The project is still going on, don't have any fear.

I'm getting ready to send everyone so far involved an email with all of the details but I wanted to try and get any last minute Con goers a chance to get involved.

At this point, please only e-mail HeatherMairiPhotography@gmail.com if you're interested in joining and all information must be included:
Name:
Badge Name:
E-mail address: (I know you're sending it to me, but better safe than sorry.)
Costumes: (and if you know it, what days you'll be going as what.)

BUT WAIT, THERE'S EVEN MORE!

THE PROJECT HAS EVOLVED A BIT! BEFORE EVERYONE STARTS EMAILING, PLEASE CLICK HERE as I have added some more to it. (All of this information will be sent in one e-mail as well).

I want to know how many of you are going to D*C and how many of you are cosplaying this year and what you’re going as. You don’t have to reply to this, you can send me a private message or even an e-mail to HeatherMairiPhotography@gmail.com.
Objective:

Part A: For the ladies:
I’ve been to Dragon*Con the last few years, this will be my.. 4th year I think. May be 3rd. I don’t remember. ANYWAY! I love taking pictures of cosplayers, but there’s always so many, I miss a lot. Especially when I do panels, but I don’t know if I want to do any this year, unless something really catches my attention.

However, this year, I want to shift my focus from taking pictures of just really great costumes, to having an actual theme and I want it to be Female Cosplayers of Dragon*Con. I’m sick of all of us getting shit for being female and dressing up as amazing characters and being grilled over and over again about how much we know about said character and being forced to prove ourselves over and over again because of our love.

Being a fan of video games or comics/graphic novels/manga, anime etc. does not mean we have to know every little detail of every little universe. Unfortunately, there are many who dont’ agree with this.

I'm looking for a multitude of costumes and fandoms, but I really want to aim for video game/comic book cosplays. This is the one area, where as a female, we are given the most attitude.

Even if you're not cosplaying as a comic or video game character and you want to be involved, please, get in touch with me. I will not reject anybody! (kids are also welcome)

Which brings me to

Part B of the Objective: For the guys

I would also like to find some guys who will be attending DC13 who don’t give a shit if a female knows every single detail of a character, game, comic, movie etc. etc. but loves the fact that they (the females) are willing to show their love for something, regardless of the ridicule and crap dealt out by those that are too insecure with themselves to open to the idea that females can be gamers - whether table top, card, RPG, first person, or comic nerds.

If anyone is willing to help out with this, please send an email to HeatherMairiPhotography@gmail.com for more details or any questions you might have. I’m still planning this out, but there’s quite a few things I would like to do with this project.

Just a quick note: I've been getting a lot of responses for this project (yay!), so I have to ask if you want to be a part of this, please don't just post in a comment to someone else. I might miss it, and I don't want to do that.

Also, if you've noticed I haven't checked in with someone yet, please keep chatter to a minimum. Once I've checked in with a person, chat to your hearts content. I just want to make sure everyone who says they want to be a part of this, gets checked in.

Looks like there's been some fudging with the Tolkien Track schedule. There was a track director switch from last year, and some things are getting muddled in the switch.

The Tolkien Track isn't showing up at ALL in the app and the Pocket Program has the rough draft schedule.

So if anyone is actually interested, the up-to-date schedule is posted on the Tolkien Track site here: http://middleearth.dragoncon.org/schedule-2012/

Just to clear any confusion!

It's my sad duty to report that legendary fantasy cover artist Darrell K. Sweet passed away this morning. He leaves behind a rich legacy of art gracing more book covers than I can count, a Hugo nomination and numerous other award nominations. Darrell was a guest of the convention back in 2005 and I was fortunate to spend time with him in the WOT track. Unfortunately, he died with his final book cover incomplete. From what I've been told, the cover for A MEMORY OF LIGHT, the final WHEEL OF TIME novel was still in it's early stages when he passed. He was 77.

This guy stole the Legolas standee from the Tolkien track room sometime between 9pm & 10pm on Saturday night. There was a panel going on when he took it. If you know him, please ask him to contact:

jwwert@gmail.com

This is the rightful owner of the standee, who generously donated it to the Tolkien track room for decoration. No hard feelings will be had, just having it back is all they care about. It is written in pen on the back of the standee "Wert".

Ahoy all!

In past years, I've appeared at DragonCon in my role as senior editor of Weird Tales, the world's oldest fantasy/horror/sci-fi magazine. This year, I'm the editor and coauthor of a new book that I'm showcasing at the con: GEEK WISDOM: The Sacred Teachings of Nerd Culture.

It's a sci-fi/fantasy-themed inspirational book, featuring 200 one-page philosophical musings based on the most beloved quotations from geeky films, books, tv shows, comics, etc. ("You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." "So say we all." "Snozzberries? Who ever heard of a snozzberry?" "I have been, and always shall be, your friend." "Wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey.") There are quotations and references from all our favorite things: Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy, Marvel and DC Comics, Star Wars, Star Trek, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Dune, The Powerpuff Girls, ThinkGeek t-shirts...

I'm incredibly proud to have been able to compile this testament to 21st-century nerdity. Several brilliant coauthors helped me create it, including Hugo- and Nebula-nominated novelist N.K. Jemisin ("The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms,") steampunk novelist and blogger Genevieve Valentine ("Mechanique"), movie critic and political commentator Zaki Hasan (The Huffington Post), and indie comics writer and journalist Eric San Juan ("A Year of Hitchcock").

I'll be doing a reading from GEEK WISDOM (with door prizes!) on Sunday at 1pm, in the Hyatt's Edgewood room. Would love to see you all there!

Hi folks - SO excited about Dragon*Con. I am a con newbie and I will also be travelling to the US from London so I am an Atlanta newbie too. Lots of excitement for me *snoopy dance*. I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any HP meet ups and/or any Joss Whedon or LoTR related meet ups that are generally open for people interested in those areas. I would love to meet some people who are also a teensy bit obsessed with all things nerdtastic but I am not sure how you find out about all of the different meet ups without being v active in a particular fandom...any hints/tips/advice much appreciate - I will be in Atlanta from Wednesday evening.

I am volunteering on the Tolkien Track and I wanted to know where the room was going to be held this year.  Is it going to be in the same location and area of the Marriott near the entrance as it has in the past?  If so,  I find that the location would be convenient and easy for other guests to find.  If not, however, I would be happy to know if there has been a recent room change so that I can get downtown for a trial run sometime next week as I will be in the Atlanta metro area due to attending classes at Georgia State down the street.

Let me know,

Miyah

If anyone remembers last year, we had a shortage of dress forms to display costumes on for our panel. We had an awesome turn out, from quite a few awesome ladies last year, that hauled their dress forms in for us!

If you're making a short drive, or don't mind packing up a dress form for our panel, we'd be VERY appreciative!

There will be two panels for Advanced Costuming: Friday at 11:30 am and Sunday at 11:30 am.

If you ARE willing to donate your dress form for the weekend, the best time to drop it off will be Friday between 10:00 and 11:00 at arriott L506 - L507 1, (the same room from last year).

Please be assured, that your dress form will be COMPLETELY safe, and locked in the room when panels are not going on. When panels will be going on, your dress form will be under close monitoring by Tolkien Track staff. If you'd like to pick them back up and drop them back off after and before each of the panels, that's excellent too!

We appreciate anything anyone can do for us and the costuming community! I also thank the girls, again, that allowed us to borrow their dress forms last year! You guys were wonderful!

After a complete website overhaul, the Tolkien Track website is up and running! The Dragon*con Tolkien Track

Some pages are still in progress, as is the schedule, but keep an eye out for updates! We are also looking for anyone who would like to donate Lord of the Rings decorations. We'll take banners, standdees, anything you can bring with you to Dragon*con. We are NOT asking to keep these items, only borrow them. Monday, the last day of con, you can stop by the Tolkien room and pick them up!

The costume panels will also need help with dress forms/mannequins again! If you have any room left in your car and don't mind stuffing a dress form or mannequin you might have into it, to be borrowed for a few panels, we'd sincerely appreciate it! They will be safe and secure, locked up in the room when it isn't being used. And again, you can come pick them up on Monday!

Does anyone know if the Dark Fantasy Track, Tolkien's Middle Earth Track or the X Track have seperate Livejournals/Facebook pages/websites? Thanks!

ATTENTION TO ALL THOSE LENDING DRESS FORMS/CAN LEND DRESS FORMS TO THIS PANEL:

Remember that the panel takes place on Friday at 2:30. We will need the dress forms for prepping by atleast 2. We'll be done with them by 3:30 or 4 at the max.

We're located in the Marriott in track room L506-507.

Thanks again to all those who are and can contribute!

On Saturday night at 830 pm in the Tolkien Track room, Gandalf, Bilbo, Frodo and Eowyn will be holding a discussion about the ins and outs of organizing your own fan events.

Come meet friends old and new, and maybe even stumble across a surprise or two along the way!

Gandalf - JP
Bilbo - Tim
Frodo - Daniel
Eowyn - Jo

If anyone out there is bringing a dress form with them that can be borrowed, Friday between 2:30 and 3:30 in the Tolkien Track area in the Marriott, I could really use it!

We would like to display several costumes, but so far only have 1 or 2 dress forms to our disposal. I would like atleast 2 or 3 more if possible.

If anyone could be so kind to let us borrow one for an hour, we would really be appreciative! As long as its dropped off in the Tolkien Track area around 2:00, that would be fine. Please comment if you can help us out with this! Thanks!

This will be my sixth time at Dragon*Con, but now I have a special guest: my non-geek girlfriend. To be fair, she has some geek sympathies/tendencies. She's into Lost and LOTR, and has a pop-culture level of recognition of many things (ie, she could identify Spock, the Joker, or Darth Vader).

I'm planning to spend most of Friday just taking her around the con sight-seeing (I was gonna do it in plainclothes to stay under the radar, but she insisted I wear my Dharma jumpsuit), and we're planning to spend most of the rest of the weekend together, but we don't want to be stuck to each other 24/7. She's also usually not good around groups of people, but Dragon*Con will hopefully transcend "I am nervous around a lot of people" and become "wow, look at all these crazy people" :) And, worst-case scenario, she chills in our room in the Hilton a lot.

With all this in mind, does anyone have recommendations for how I can make this con as fun as possible for her?
