Hey everyone,

As a lot of you remember, a few months back I posted about this photography project that I'm going to be starting at D*C this year. The project is still going on, don't have any fear.

I'm getting ready to send everyone so far involved an email with all of the details but I wanted to try and get any last minute Con goers a chance to get involved.

At this point, please only e-mail HeatherMairiPhotography@gmail.com if you're interested in joining and all information must be included:
Name:
Badge Name:
E-mail address: (I know you're sending it to me, but better safe than sorry.)
Costumes: (and if you know it, what days you'll be going as what.)

BUT WAIT, THERE'S EVEN MORE!

THE PROJECT HAS EVOLVED A BIT! BEFORE EVERYONE STARTS EMAILING, PLEASE CLICK HERE as I have added some more to it. (All of this information will be sent in one e-mail as well).

I want to know how many of you are going to D*C and how many of you are cosplaying this year and what you’re going as. You don’t have to reply to this, you can send me a private message or even an e-mail to HeatherMairiPhotography@gmail.com.
Objective:

Part A: For the ladies:
I’ve been to Dragon*Con the last few years, this will be my.. 4th year I think. May be 3rd. I don’t remember. ANYWAY! I love taking pictures of cosplayers, but there’s always so many, I miss a lot. Especially when I do panels, but I don’t know if I want to do any this year, unless something really catches my attention.

However, this year, I want to shift my focus from taking pictures of just really great costumes, to having an actual theme and I want it to be Female Cosplayers of Dragon*Con. I’m sick of all of us getting shit for being female and dressing up as amazing characters and being grilled over and over again about how much we know about said character and being forced to prove ourselves over and over again because of our love.

Being a fan of video games or comics/graphic novels/manga, anime etc. does not mean we have to know every little detail of every little universe. Unfortunately, there are many who dont’ agree with this.

I'm looking for a multitude of costumes and fandoms, but I really want to aim for video game/comic book cosplays. This is the one area, where as a female, we are given the most attitude.

Even if you're not cosplaying as a comic or video game character and you want to be involved, please, get in touch with me. I will not reject anybody! (kids are also welcome)

Which brings me to

Part B of the Objective: For the guys

I would also like to find some guys who will be attending DC13 who don’t give a shit if a female knows every single detail of a character, game, comic, movie etc. etc. but loves the fact that they (the females) are willing to show their love for something, regardless of the ridicule and crap dealt out by those that are too insecure with themselves to open to the idea that females can be gamers - whether table top, card, RPG, first person, or comic nerds.

If anyone is willing to help out with this, please send an email to HeatherMairiPhotography@gmail.com for more details or any questions you might have. I’m still planning this out, but there’s quite a few things I would like to do with this project.

Just a quick note: I've been getting a lot of responses for this project (yay!), so I have to ask if you want to be a part of this, please don't just post in a comment to someone else. I might miss it, and I don't want to do that.

Also, if you've noticed I haven't checked in with someone yet, please keep chatter to a minimum. Once I've checked in with a person, chat to your hearts content. I just want to make sure everyone who says they want to be a part of this, gets checked in.

Below is the unofficial schedule of academic comics studies and pop culture studies programming at Dragon*Con, organized by the Comics and Popular Arts Conference for 5 years now. There is also a more printable version and a schedule grid

Thank you to everyone, participants, track heads, and attendees, who have made academic programming such a success over the years. If you enjoy what you see this year, I urge you to go to the D*C Mobile App and rate our panels!

Hi, I'm Bill Meeks and once again I'll be covering Dragon*Con for Bleeding Cool. Bleeding Cool is a Comics/TV/Film website that is in Technorati's top 5 entertainment sites and gets over 1,000,000 uniques per month.

I'm trying to raise some funds to improve the quality and turnaround time on the coverage by having a hotel room on site. I set up an Indiegogo to fund it here:

Indiegogo: Help Send Bleeding Cool to Dragon*Con

You can give whatever you'd like and you'll a 'Special Thanks' in all of our coverage as well as access to all the raw images we take (last year we took about 3,000 pictures) that you can use for whatever purposes you'd like. A little more will also net you some souvenir from the convention (or a beer on me if you are coming to the con).

We are also offering full sponsorships at $50 per day, which will get you an ad right at the front of a certain day's videos. We aim to put out 4-6 videos per days and our videos last year averaged around 2,000/video. Based on interviews we already have set up I expect our views to double this year if not triple.

So, thanks if anybody can help make our coverage even better this year, and we'll see you at the con!

DC Comics, as part of their current reboot, is publishing a new Catwoman book. The first issue concludes with Catwoman and Batman going at it hot and heavy. (And I don't mean in the fisticuffs sense.) Abhay Kholsa, one of the witty reviewers at savagecritic.com took DC to task for putting out this kind of thing. In passing, he included this remark:

"...this is a thing that happens in real life– since you know and I know that people have definitely, definitely, definitely dressed up in those costumes and had sex in the bathroom of comic conventions, at least Dragon*Con because that one’s in Hotlanta and the heat and the sweat and the Bat-a-rangs, it’s probably just like that movie Body Heat except ever so slightly more Batmanish…"

So, Dragon*Con's fame continues to spread! How does that old saying go? "There's no such thing as bad publicity." I know he's joking, but there's usually some truth behind humor. Is this really the rep that D*C has?

Here's the link for the article:

Warning: The illos from the comic are probably NSFW. Depending on where you work.

Here is a list of all the academic panels at Dragon*Con that have been organized by the Comics and Popular Arts Conference group. This year's programming would not have been possible without my co-organizer, R. Scott Nokes, our Programming Chair, Damien Williams, and our Programming Committee: Dennis LoRusso, Stephanie Noell, Vickie Willis, and Robin Zebrowski. And of course, all of the fantastic track heads.

Hey everyone,

Well we are just over a month away for another great time at Dragoncon. Frankly I am looking forward to the convention. Although the current guest listing as of 7-26 is very good overall. There are some fine names to the film and televison catagory, I just feel there is something missing. Like a guest that would make you jump out of your seat and say wow they really got that person to come to Dragoncon. For the past month guest list announcements for film & television has fell to mediocrity. I counted only 9 names announce for film and Television since 6-27 and we lost one to cancellation. So we net 8 new names and from my point of view they are meh guest. No one that stands out making me say wow. I really hope that who ever is responsible for getting talent to attend Dragoncon will pull out some aces in the next 30 days with names that will surprise me. I want to be wowed.

So here is my final top ten of who I would like to see come to Dragoncon. In no particular order.

1. Richard Dean Anderson: He has attended a convention overseas recently, so why not join Amanda Tapping.

2. Jared Padelecki & or:

3. Jensen Ackles from Supernatural, they already gotten some great talent from the show. So lets top it off with these two.

4. Allison Scagliotti from Warehouse 13. She is one of my favorite characters from the show who I haven't met yet.

5. Eliza Dushka She has been attending conventions this year, so why not come to Dragoncon

6. Jeri Ryan nuff said

7. Jolene Blalock need to complete my Enterprise main cast autographs.

8. Gina Torres of Firefly, same reason as above

9. Grace Park same as above but with the success of Hawaii 5.0 it is very very very long shot of that happening.

10. Sanctuary anyone from the main who isn't have been announce yet. Ryan, Robbin, Agam or even Emilie

Well, that is my list on who will get me to say wow they are coming to Dragoncon. So what are your thoughts on the current guest list and who would you like to see come. For you it can be someone from Authors, Music, or Comic category. So lets hear your thoughts.

I’m organizing a panel on the challenges of adaptation of modern supers into the Steampunk/Neo-Victorian universe. Do you draw a comic? Are you a fan who cosplays a super hero that you admire or have you created a character of your own (nudging at the Emperor of the Red Fork Empire) then this is where you can show off your stuff!

I’m looking for about four to six panelists and a room full of attendees. If you’re interested on being on the panel, drop me a note and we’ll start brain storming!

(please forgive the cross posting)

I know Lars and Sohmer from Looking For Group are coming this year, but I havn't seen any other webcomic artists or writers coming. Has anyone heard anything from Richard Adams and Rob Balder of any other major comic makers?

Getting some money together for DragonCon (aren't we all?).   Strange, I'm selling this stuff just to buy MORE stuff at D*C.  I guess it's the Geek Circle of Life.

I'm selling a bunch of anime, manga and comics on my eBay store.  I list anime and manga every Wednesday and Friday.  I'll be listing some Hot Topic clothing on Wednesday, as well.

My Etsy store has costume items including Cyberlox hair falls, yarn hair falls, boot covers/leg warmers (faux fur) and custom eyepatches.  I'll be listing more items in the next couple of weeks.

Link goes to my website with links to the two stores.  thegraycat.com/7.html

With Mignola and Ramos already announced, and now Darwyn Cooke and Jim Mahfood, D*C 2009 is shaping up to be a great con for comics fans.

Dragon*Con this weekend -- I'll be there... will you?

Don't miss Dragon*Con this year, from August 29 - September 1, 2008.

I'll be there, along with hundreds of comic book creators, sci-fi and fantasy authors and TV and movie celebrities.

My "homebase" will be in Comics Artits Alley at Table #7 (near Andy Runton and Peter David).

I'll be participating in the following panels/readings during the con.

Friday 02:30 pm
Room L508
Oh No You Di'nt! Version 1.0 - Writers' Pitfalls
An examination of various "Don'ts" for comics writers by some of the medium's top authors.

Saturday 01:00 pm
Williams Room
Dragon*Reading from my short stories and other prose work (and a preview of the Fishnet Angel novel)

Monday 10:00 am
Room L508
Oh No, You Di'nt ! Version 2.0 - Comics' Greatest Blunders
An open discussion of "jump the shark" moments in popular comics. Clones, alien imposters, identities erased, false deaths and impossible resurrections - where have our favorite heroes (and their creative guides) led us astray?

So come on and have a good time and show some love to your favorite writer of superhero S&M adventures. (And if s/he isn't there, then drop by my table and say hello to me.)

If you have any questions about the con, go to the official website at http://www.dragoncon.org

I see in the alphabetical guest listing that Georges Jeanty is to be at the Comic Artist Alley--but then when I look at *that* listing, he's not on the floor plan. I was kind of hoping to get my Buffy comics signed.

I glad to announce that we are now accepting pre-orders for the 2008 CJ Bloomer Sketchbook and the Limited Edition 1st Issue of our comic "The Price of Tea" being unveiled at DragonCon.  CJ's fantastic art will be featured in the DragonCon Art Show and we will have a table set up in the artist's room.  You will also have a chance to hear him speak on the subject of "The Mythic Image in Fantasy Art" during a panel talk.   All the details are on my LJ Page and feel free to visit our website Nydwyn Green Dragon Studio at www.nydwyngreendragon.com .  Can't wait to see everyone there!

**PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY**

The Institute for Comic Studies and the Comics and Pop Art division of Dragon*Con are working together to develop an academic conference for the studies of comics and pop art to take place at Dragon-Con. This year, we're planning 3-4 panel presentations of academic work with 2-4 scholars at each panel. (Next year, I hope that we can organize a full-fledged academic conference like the "Comic Arts Conference" at San Diego Comic-Con and WonderCon.) The Institute for Comic Studies is trying to organize a number of such conferences in concert with Comics and Pop Arts conventions around the country.

We're looking for proposals for 20 minute presentations which engage in substantial scholarly examinations of comic books, graphic novels and pop art. A broad range of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives are being sought, including such literary and art criticism, philosophy, linguistics, history, and communication. Proposals may range from discussions of the nature of the comics medium, analyses of particular works and authors, discussions of the visual language of comics, to comics pedagogy, and more. We are especially interested in ideas on the topics of "Watchmen," "comics and philosophy," and "comics and cultures." Please reply with a title and description of your presentation ASAP in either a comment to this post or by email to mattbrown AT ucsd DOT edu. We're on a tight deadline and space on the program is very limited.

Are there any groups doing a Green Lantern related (GL Corps, Sinestro Corps, War of Light) meet-up? I've just about finished an original Red Lantern costume (very morbid and creepifying with laser cut chest and ring emblems and about 80% done on the light-up ring) and want some people to play against. There's 8 colors to play with so let's have some fun!!!

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? ^.^
