Please note that I did not write this, but I just found it on-line. The opinions, reviews, and directions are provided by the author of the guide, as I only go downtown abt once a year, so I'm hoping the info is accurate. I don't know who wrote it, as there doesn't seem to be a name attached.

Call ahead and check the info w/ the restaurants themselves.

For those of you cosplaying from televison crime dramas/detective shows/police procedurals/whatever else you wanna call 'em, your gracious hosts Penelope Garcia (my friend) and Abby Sciuto (me) are hosting a photoshot on the 5th floor of the Hilton, Saturday at 5:00 pm. For those interested, dinner at Southern Elements in the Hilton will follow.

Also, a reminder that this is not just for "Criminal Minds" and "NCIS" cosplayers- anyone from any television crime drama ever made in any country counts (yes, this even includes BBC's "Sherlock"), and duplicate characters are welcome.

Oh yes, the link is to the Facebook page, but there's also this thread here.

My sister's friend is a Dragoncon newbie, and she happens to have a gluten allergy. Are there any restaurants near the convention that serve gluten-free entrees? I know Mellow Mushroom has a bunch of gluten-free pizzas, but I believe it's a bit of a walk from the hotels.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For all those Con goers always looking for a drug store, CVS will be opening a 13,000 sq. ft. store at 235 Peachtree Street - basically at Peachtree Center.

Well, sort of. Yesterday, the voters of Atlanta overwhelmingly approved the ballot measure to allow Sunday alcohol sales. But, the text of the measure read:

"Shall the governing authority of the City of Atlanta, Georgia be authorized to permit and regulate package sales by retailers of both malt beverages and wine on Sundays between the hours of 12:30 P.M. and 11:30 P.M.?"

Fans of "hard liquor" will apparently still need to stock up on Saturday.

... the Geeks of Primetime Crime Photoshoot (why yes, this is the photoshoot I mentioned in an earlier post- we have a time and place now).

For those interested, dinner at either Southern Elements or Trader Vic's (majority's choice), both also in the Hilton, will follow. Hello everyone!

We are looking to stock our room with some munchies and booze (for more efficient con attendance, although I do remember an excellent breakfast joint from my last DC) and I am wondering if there is a grocery/convenience store and a liquor store within walking distance of the host hotels. Preferably one that is open after 11 since our flights get in late on Thursday night. We aren't going to have a car so it needs to be within a mile or so. Also another silly question, do grocery stores in Georgia sell alcohol? We have weird laws in Colorado and they can't. It's stupid.

Thanks for the help everyone!

The question about taking food and drink into the hotels made me wonder: Are you allowed to eat and drink in the rooms where the con panels are held? At least, before the panel starts? Some cons allow it, some don't. I have a vague memory of reading somewhere that it's not allowed at D*C, but I haven't been able to find any info to back that up. I'd understand if it's not allowed, because of the trash problem caused by people who don't clean up after themselves. I assume it's OK while waiting in line, since I've read a lot of accounts of folks drinking while waiting to get into a panel. Is that the case?

Map of Peachtree Center Complex from the official site

Downtown Google Map from The Daily Dragon

STREET RENAMING: The City of Atlanta just last week renamed Harris St., the street that runs to the south of the Hyatt, Marriott Marquis, and Hilton, to John Portman Blvd. at Historic Harris St.(how's that for a mouthful). Basically John Portman Blvd. and Harris St. are the same name. The Google Map somehow already has the new name, but other ones will still say Harris St. Most likely the street signs will still say Harris St. as well.

FYI: For those wondering who John Portman is, he's the designer/builder of several of the D*C hotels(Hyatt, Marriott Marquis, Westin) and the Peachtree Center complex with the Food Courts and the older Hamster Tunnels.
