The answers I've gotten back are:

If we go with the program we will put it on the web, it is still really
early in the discussion.

They said they did have things like what we were asking about in the works with shorter hours for volunteers who can't commit to the amount they are asking for now so let's all keep an eye on it and keep making suggestions for our safety. And if nothing else we can always make our own volunteer program to make sure people have escorts in between hotels or to their rooms.

Howdy campers!  We have an update for you regarding the unruly convention crashers at the host hotels.  We have reached an agreement in principal with the host hotels to restrict access to badged convention members or hotel guests with hotel keys during the evening hours.  The exact details and hours of restricted access will be finalized and we will have a further update once those particulars are hammered out.  There will also be extra security available during the these hours to help address some of the incidents we experienced from last year.  The hotels are very aware of our concerns and have pledged to work with us in 2011 to maintain our traditional fun evening atmosphere and keep any problem children away.

Dragon*Con has no plans to move off of the Labor Day date in the future.  We love the date, you love the date, the hotels love the date and us and are very committed to keeping their favorite extended family happy and as secure as possible.

I wanted to give a shoutout/thanks (again!) to the 2 ladies who helped my cousin out. She had cut her foot on the curtain thingies by the stage during the Time Traveler's Ball and was bleeding badly. Since I am funny around blood, I was sent out to find first aid...still looking for the "woman with the black parasol" as instructed by a DragonCon volunteer... Luckily, these ladies came around and helped her stop the bleeding and dress her up when after 1/2 hour the security dude at the Westin showed up with a first aid kit. If anyone knows who these wonderfully ladies were, please let me know. Thanks!

p.s. better security and hotel presence needed at Westin...shouldn't have took a 1/2 hour to find official help.

I want everyone who has responded to these thread about "Ideas for next year" to actually come volunteer. Please!

What makes you all think we have not thought of all of these ideas?? And you know what will make these ideas a success??? People!!! We need volunteers!!

Only half of the people that we had badges for in Security showed up to volunteer. So we were severely short-handed!!

We work the long hours because no one else is willing to work the basic 25, so everyone has to pick up the slack.

We had many of our volunteers able to "work" the panels they wanted to and were able to see the panel up close! They didn't have to stand in line for 4+ hours for registration. Nor did they have to stand in line for 2 hours to see a panel like Stan Lee but was able to watch it up close!

If we had a full staff, no one would have to work 8-10 hours day!

This is my 17th year at Dragon Con and it was the least secure that I've ever felt at a con.  The first thing that I noticed it that anyone and everyone could go down to the con floors.  In  years past, to get down the escalator from the lobby of the Hyatt and the Marriott, you had to show a badge.  No badge, you were told that you could not access those floors.  This cut down on a lot of non-con goers crowding the main con floors.  Usually after about 8pm at night, if you didn't have a room key or a badge, you did not get into the Hyatt or the Marriott.  There was no security doing that this year.  Because there was no security doing that, there were non-con people everywhere I looked this year.  They were on all floors of the Hyatt and Marriott in groups.  I saw some that had obviously brought picnics to camp out on the floors and people watch.  What is up with that?

I've always felt safe at cons before, because con goers may be obnoxious at times, but they usually keep their hands to themselves.  The large groups of non-con goers made me nervous this year, especially the younger ones (teens and 20s) traveling in groups, drinking, with no badges.  In the past, these groups would have been either kept to the lobby floor or escorted out of the hotel if they did not have a room key.

Is anyone on this list from con-ops that can respond to why the floors were wide open to non-con goers this year when they have not been in the past?

I originally posted this as a comment on this post: http://community.livejournal.com/dragoncon/2542632.html

Since then I emailed several people at Dragoncon and my emails are being forwarded to the Security department and to the Convention Operations Director. I am sending along some of the ideas from below in hopes of putting together an actual sanctioned by D*C safety crew but some of us think that if that doesn't happen then there are still ways that we can all help out next year.

Here is the idea:

Ideally in a perfect world the best solution would be more police or official security but that costs money and might not be something they'll implement.

Comicon has a volunteer program where you do 3 hour shifts, one each day you're there and you get a special t-shirt only available to the volunteers. If you successfully do all your assignments then you get special access to an event the next year that others don't.

If we offered something like a discount on your ticket, the shirt and the access the next year along with the shorter shifts (I was told DragonCon volunteer security was 25 hours mandatory over the weekend which probably scares a lot of people off) you could get a whole squad of people to help out.

Now they wouldn't be full on security with the ability to kick someone out or manhandle them into submission probably but what you could have is a large group of people in very bright and obvious shirts (Say Neon orange with a huge DRAGON CON SAFETY VOLUNTEER logo) that let you know they are the DragonCon brute squad and they have a radio. They could be escorts from one hotel to another on the street level. They could be the people that you know to look for in a crowd if someone is being hassled who could instantly radio for the off duty police or other security. They are the people that could come and stand with someone who is feeling threatened and waiting for someone to come from their room or another hotel.

For people who aren't there all the days of the Con but would still like to help they could have a meeting every morning to train people in how to use the radio, where to meet up for their shift, get a map of the grounds and hotels etc. That way there isn't the hassle to try to attend a pre con meeting that is a pretty far trip for everyone that doesn't live in Atlanta.

I happen to know at least one very large man who would do jump at the chance to do this after the things being reported this year. And if we could sprinkle a lot more bodies out there to move people along and be there for someone to run/yell for when there's a problem it would probably help. And since they are there looking for trouble it's a lot more likely they could take a photo with a phone or something for the police than the person who is just trying to get away from a dangerous situation.

Just something to think about.

If no one will sanction it for being affiliated with the con there are still ways we can help out. Volunteer escorts to other hotels etc could be arranged pretty easily and we will come up with other ideas as needed.

I will let you know what kind of answers I get back from talking to people affiliated with the con. Thanks.

I have heard THREE different stories in the last week about women being sexually assaulted at the con this year by non-con-goers. I can't believe I have to say this, but THIS IS NOT COOL. I'm seriously reconsidering coming to the con next year, which would make the first time in 10 years that I've missed. There seriously needs to be some negotiating with the host hotels to keep the non-DragonCon people in line and protect the women who attend the con. I for one want to see a policy change and word from DragonCon as to what they are doing next year to protect my safety if I come to the con again *before* I make plans to attend.

So I am totally stealing this verbatim from the Dragonforums.org, but I thought it was good information for everyone here. As I am posting, looks like another entry was already made, so check out the forum if you would like to follow along or make additional posts (thread is: http://dragonconforums.org/index.php?topic=327.0 )

(The one in the forum has embedded links... not sure how to embed links here.)

(1) Everyone exchange Cell Phone numbers with those people in your group if they are not in there already.

(2) For iPhone users, Download the "Find my iPhone" App (if you have MobileMe)
(2b) If you do not have a subscription to mobile me, get the trial version of MobileMe www.me.com
When you have this... if you lose your iPhone, you can use anyone else's iPhone (with he App) to know exactly where you iPhone is... you can even remote wipe it, have it make noise, and even display a message if you want.

(3) Make sure your phone locks itself down right away.

(4) Pick a friend who will be at the con, and MOST likely to be sober/ with it enough to not lose THEIR phone.
Take a picture of THEIR cell phone number with the words:
"If found, please call this number to return this phone to it's owner" and make this the picture it shows when you go to unlock the screen.
This way if a good samaritan finds your phone, they can return it to you more easily.
(You could also tape something to the back of the phone saying the same thing... but that would be so 1990's).

We volunteers keep Dragon*Con running for you!!!! Come help us out!!!
[identity profile] gabstaff.livejournal.com

When and Where for Which Event........

Super Heroes - Westin Peachtree Plaza hotel the Peachtree Ballroom (8th floor).
Doors open at 1:00 and you need to be there no later than 12:15pm for you
assignment

Star Trek - Sheraton Grand Ballroom. Doors are tentatively scheduled to open
around 7:30pm and will by no later than 8:00pm. You need to be there no later
than 7:00 for you assignment.

What we need that only YOU can provide,

YOU! we need YOU there to help pull this off. it takes a LOT of people to do a
varied array of tasks and duties that need to be accomplished in a very short
time frame to get those participants in the spaces, counted, in place and
documented. Roughly for every 40 people in the attempt we need ONE Volunteer
person for them. Given the fact that the Super Heroes Record is currently at
1245 people that's a lot of YOU that we need. Given the fact that current Star
Trek Record is around a 500 some odd that was set by some other con earlier this
year we want to CRUSH that record since this con stole the idea of setting World
Records from us in the first place, so again that is going to take a lot of YOU.

You need to be polite, a problem solver, a logical thinker, and sense of humor
wouldn't hurt.

You do NOT need a costume for either of these. You do get to be some of the few
and far between people that get to witness these things which are not open to
the general public or to Dragon*Con attendees who are not participating in the
attempts. There are other perks and advantages to Volunteering that will be
made known in a later email and just prior to attempts.

Some have already contacted me about this and if I have already spoken with you,
you are good to go. If you have not spoken to me yet and want to Volunteer for
both of these or for one or the other please email me at
eaves(dot)mike(at)gmail(dot)com with SE Staff in the Subject line.

Both of these are going to be an amazing time and here is your chance to not
only be in on them but to help make them happen and put Dragon*Con in the World
Records book.

I am considering walking around D*C in uncrowded areas[1] carrying a significant static electrical charge. In what way might I label myself to unambiguously and immediately identify that touching me[1] would be a Bad Idea? A shirt that says "Danger: High Voltage" seems quite ambiguous (due to the song by the same name) and potentially interpreted as simply humorous.

[1] Sparse enough that I can guarantee that neither will I accidentally touch anyone nor will anyone accidentally touch me. It's intentional touching that worries me.

Because I may have missed it and the situation just came up today I have to ask.

We have a friend who (Due to his insane girlfriend refusing to get a job and carry her weight)won't be able to afford the entire weekend. He's supposed to be in our parade group on Saturday (And is an important part). So, here is my two part question:

1) How much is JUST Saturday? (I looked on the website and could only find the whole weekend prices) Because we will most likely have to help him financially to attend.

2) Can you pick up Saturday passes on Friday? the reason I ask is because line up for the parade is 9am and I want to make sure we are ALL together in time for the parade.

If this question has already been answered, I apologize for those who have to repeat the answer, but there isn't a real search for this question on here.

Thank you!

Thank you

I wish to thank DC Security staffers and the rest of the staff to help make this a great con.  It was a hard con this year, no more DC on a full moon weekend.  But I wish to thank each and everyone of you.  You have help make this one a great con.  Again Thank you all for the great job this year and see you next year.

I remember reading in this community that the ballrooms would be cleared between panels. That's a great idea. :) It's only fair to those who have waited in line.

I was wondering about a couple of things, though.

1) If folks are lined up to enter for the next panel in a ballroom, does security send them out a door different from the one where folks are lined up? I don't attend a lot of big panels, so can't remember how this is handled. It would make logical sense if people left by a different door, so that they couldn't mix in and break the line that is waiting for the next panel.

2) Will the smaller fan-track rooms also be cleared between panels?

Heyla...throwing together last minute costumes (why do I always get these great costuming ideas ONE WEEK before con??) and have a peacebonding question.

This is a steel replica of a tri-barrel pistol. Its hammer does click back, but is otherwise non-functional; the barrels are solid steel. I have no holster or belt for it; I would be carrying it in my hand. How would I/do I need to peacebond this accessory? I don't want to bug security at the con unless I have to...they have enough to worry about. :-)

This is the shiny in question. )

Thanks! (and less than a week to go holy $%$*!*(@)

I do apologize to the folks that posted earlier this month in regards to this subject. I generally do not scan LiveJournal unless it is brought to my attention first. (it is hard enough for me to keep up with my personal journal friends. HA!)

Official ruling is that you cannot start lining up for a panel until the previous panel has been seated. For 1st panels of the day, we will allot up to 2 hours before the scheduled time of said panel UNLESS it becomes a fire hazard then the line is dispersed.

I hope this helps.

Hi Everyone,

I am almost scared to post since everyone will think I am telling you the Pocket Program is here, and while I hate to disappoint, I do have very important information from our EMS and Security departments!  We want to help keep everyone safe and secure during the convention, so please check the information below, and consider volunteering!

PLEASE NOTE: Any persons who have already purchased their badges, and choose to volunteer for either department below, will have their first time volunteer fee, and their badge transfer fees waived.  Please let the director know if that pertains to you so the appropriate departments can be notified.  In the case of EMS, first time volunteers will also have their fees waived.

What are the hotels' alcohol policies?  People have mentioned carrying around flasks or water bottles filled with their favorite concoction; but I am wondering about obvious open containers such as beer bottles.  Can you drink a beer in the hallways.   Will I be able to drink a beer while listening to the Brobdingnagian Bards or some other filk performance?  Do the hotels set up mini bars at some of the activities such as the Pirate Party?

Thanks for your replies.

I would like to thank all of DC Security on working so hard this year.  It was a hard year with the Marriot going 24 hours but you did it with out a fuss.  Many of you stepped up to work hard and we had alot of new people who jumped right on in to help us out.  I thank each and everyone of you for giving up so much of your time to make the con safer for all the fans.  See you all soon.

Thought of the day :  You are as only as good as the company you keep.
