I usually just stick to the treadmill in the Marriot, but I'd be interested to hear what others do. One cool thing about working out at the host hotels is that you usually see some of the guests doing the same...!
Thanks! I'll probably hit the Hyatt fitness center for strength/core exercise, but for running I prefer the real thing. Maybe I'll give treadmills another try, though. It's been a while.
Oddly enough - right before the parade I think there is a group of runners that hit half the route. We have seen them for 5 years now. Check to see if Atlanta has maps of established routes or contact running clubs in the area. We use the Marriott treadmill as well.
There's an outdoor track on the 4th (maybe 3rd) floor of the Hilton, off the same wing with the Walk of Fame. There's usually a couple of people out there.
I don't know of an actual Dcon running group, but there are local ones that might let you join in.
Also the downtown area of ATL is built in a sort of grid pattern. There are long stretches of street right along the host hotels that you can run for at least a mile or so down and back.
I'd be interested in running outside for a change instead of the Hyatt treadmills.
I'll be training for a 100-mile bike and a half marathon, so I'll def need the cardio. :D
My usual training regimen is 1) 'waking up at 9:45 and having to get showered and dressed really quick, then get from the 41 floor of the marriott to Hilton 201 by 9:55 2) getting 20 minutes between panels, and running (around the outside, because it's quicker) up to the hyatt, and up the stairs to the consuite, grabbing something to eat+drink, and running back. 3) weight training - carrying the recording equipment from Hilton 201 to the crystal ballroom (or this year Marriott A601) in the 10 minutes between one panel ending and the next starting (EFF panels often run long, we believe in good value!), and then back after it's finished. 4) Meeting my wife to get the kids because HER shift is just starting
I wore a pedometer a couple years ago and logged 20+miles just walking during the con (including walking in the parade). However, walking != running. Runners gotta run, yo :)
There is actually a race the day of the parade, it's the Atl 20K/10K. It starts at 7:15. I'll be doing the 20K portion. It will probably get in the way of me seeing the parade but I'm ok with that. I think its about a mile and a half away from the Marriott. Other than that I'll be sticking with the treadmill. Here's the link. http://runningnerdnation.com/Running_Nerd_Nation/home/home.html
I've only run on the treadmill at the Hilton but I'd love to try the outdoor track or roads and meet up with other runners (I'm a distance runner but not crazy long distance; I race anything 10K and under, mostly 5Ks). Wow, doing a race during Dragon*Con is hardcore. Interestingly, there's a low-key looking run called Atlanta Action Dash on Monday at 8 am where participants are encouraged to dress up like superheroes: http://www.actiondash.org/site/TR?fr_id=1040&pg=entry There's a 5K on Saturday too at 8:30 am, both of these are in Piedmont Park about 2 miles from the host hotel area: http://www.rungeorgia.com/legalrun5k.html I'm planning to do the parade on Saturday but might be tempted to hit a fun run dressed as a superhero, in the D*C spirit, on Monday.
Good to see you too! Some of these races are tempting, but I do tend to stay out very late at during the con. I think my best chance of hitting that Monday 5K is to just stay up :)
This is a great posting and thanks for it zarathud. I had actually been thinking about using the exercise equipment at my hotel as well to get some exercise. However, it was at the back of mind my mind at the moment and so I thank you for bringing that up. So I will now be looking at my hotel's website for more information about my exercise room.
hmm I don't even know if my hotel (NOT a host hotel) has a gym...but I definitely run! I'd love to/prefer to do it outside but I'm not sure I want to or could run around downtown ATL by myself :-/
I was going to do Peachtree up to sort of midtown area. I have run from 17th to 4th and I am guessing if I come from the other direction, I can get just as much in. Don't run toward underground. Centennial is nice too but just not any impressive distance.
