Hopefully this is community appropriate.. I need a very simple metal symbol made for my Dragon*Con costume. I believe it would just involve bending a piece of metal into place, and it would be something like 3-4 inches long. I'm not looking for fancy metal, just something simple!

If you can do this for me, please send me a message on here :) Examples of your work would be nice if possible. Thanks!

Yes, you came to the right place (or at least one of them).

Could you be more specific?

Which Symbol? What kind of metal? How are you planning to attach it to your costume? (sometimes that's actually the hardest part)

It would be easier for someone to tell if they can help with more info. :)

P.S If you can't source what you want, or it's too expensive, try either of these:-

1. Aluminum [cooking] foil wrapped/glued and smoothed over a cardboard base. Attach to costume with safety pin on back [like a pin badge].

2. Metallic fabric over stiffener fabric [the latter is the sort of thing one might put inside a collar or hat & is very easy to sew]; sew carefully in place.

A friend of mine recommends these guys- minmachining@yahoo.com. He said to tell them that he sent you over-Daniel Valdez, also know as Steampunk Dr. X.

If you want to learn to make it yourself, come out to Freeside Atlanta. (freesideatlanta.org)

We're crafty! Also we have people that know metal! And lots of other nifty stuff.

You could also try:

thick wire (available at Walmart or craft stores) 10 or 12 gauge

braid the strands like you would hair (don't forget to add half again the finished length to the strands to make up for the weaving)

shape it around an object like a small can of air freshener to get the round part, then bend the ends for the flat parts

curl and/or file the ends so there are no sharp points.

If you use uncoated wire, you can pound it with a hammer (gently) and it will stiffen the wire so it's not so flexable and will help lock in the braiding. If you use copper wire it will turn brown with time and handling - if you use aluminum wire, a thin coat of black finger nail polish will make it dark with a glimmer of shine.

Sorry, I'm unable to send a picture - camera's broke.
