Some folks out there have come up with the brilliant idea to get D*C into the Guinness Book for the largest group of folks doing the thriller dance all together at once. I don't think there's been a recent update from them but it would only take 243 people from what I understand and I'm sure this can be done. This is their facebook: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=94488259317 . If anyone knows more about this, I wanna  hear it! Especially with MJ passing, I'm sure the interest could be drummed up.

The only problem I can see is that the facebook page doesn't say ANYTHING about them having contacted the GBWR about applying to break the record. There are very strict rules and they're going to have to follow them.
That said, this is a unique PR opportunity for D*C if they run with it.

Laz.

This was also posted on the Cosplay.com forums (http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=184211), and contacting GBWR has been mentioned there.

Totally not my thing (I could not dance if my life depended on it), but I would gladly watch if it ends up happening.

Would we be following the "Thrill the World" steps using an mp3 with the instructions? Otherwise I'd have to leave it the more coordinated....

Being as it looks as if I'll be the one "teaching" I'm checking out this method right now. As of right now, I don't know Thriller. LOL. Compared to what I've been having to learn with belly dance choreos this spring and summer, I'm thinking it's not going to be too hard. :) I'd recommend anyone that thinks they might want to participate to go ahead and be learning. If the Thrill the World method works for you then go for it. :)

This is what the William and Mary group used for their world-record effort, this way everyone would be doing the same thing. And Ines Markeljevic shows how to do the steps in excruciating detail. ;)

Those who can do it without instructions, more power to you, I just wouldn't even attempt it unless I could listen to Ines somehow! :)

Um, a thriller dance sounds like a wonderful idea.

But as for gaining the world record? Even just from Guinness?

ooooo ooooo oooooo! Ok, I had to make another account to post this. LOL (damn password getting lost)

Ok, I am one of the 3 that are planning this whole Thriller thing. If any of you know Kimber, she one of the others and has contacted Guinness and waiting to hear back. Same with Dragon Con. Our third partner in crime is doing a website that will be available to everyone. She's had a death in the family, which just happened last week as she was about to put it up, so we're going to give her some room. Meanwhile, the Facebook group is the only thing available right now.

I do intend to get the steps into some written form to post (wherever)as that is what works for me. I will check out the Thrill the World link.

I will post here when the website comes up and if there are any developments. And meanwhile if you are on Facebook, please join the group. I'll see if Kimber has heard from anyone yet.

If we end up NOT being able to do it for Guinness, well maybe we can just do it anyway and hey, drink some Guinness. :D

Hoping this isn't something that happens and I miss it.

Don't think we'd be breaking any records, but it sure would be fun if we could organize it.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to MJ costumes. <3

Prison??? The record right now stands at 242, done by a school......William and Mary. That was back in May. Now unless someone has broken it since May, that's the official world record.

numbereleven means the inmates from the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center in the Philippines. I think they didn't make the cut because only a few of them were doing all the dance moves.

D*C Thriller dance world record

Date: 2009-07-15 06:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kimberworld.livejournal.com

Hiyas :) This is Kimber, the crazy person that started all this. Let me give you all a bit of information since I've got things spread all over the place.

1. I contacted D*C back in May about this. I haven't heard back from Regina after my last email, but I will be getting back to her once I have a few more details worked out. I would love for them to help us, but we're working on some things in case they can't.

2. A bit more about what we're doing in case D*C won't/can't help us: One of the people involved in organizing this has some contacts with Atlanta police, so we're hoping they can help, too. We're trying to organize this while living several hours from Atlanta, so it's going to take time for people to get back to us on stuff. We also have to keep safety in mind as well as what is legal in the city.

3. I've already done the paperwork for Guinness Book and am waiting on them now. I know you all don't know me from the next nutjob, but believe me I am a researcher and rule person, so this will be done properly IF we can go for the world record. If we don't, then let's just do it for fun.

4. The prisoners are neither an official world record nor were all of them doing the Thriller dance. They rock, for sure, but the official GBWR has the William and Mary students as official. Please check out http://www.wm.edu/news/stories/2009/wm-officially-breaks-thriller-dance-record-123.php and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiVutlz9Yzs.

5. Everything will be done in accordance to GBWR if we can do this for the record. I have the paperwork and an account with them.

6. No, we don't want everyone dressed as zombies, but if you want to do a zombie costume, that's cool. What my vision was when I first thought of this was that we have the essence of DragonCon, so I want stormtroopers, Browncoats, Jedi, Slave Leia, Dr. Horrible, fairies, superheroes, and all that makes D*C what it is dancing together. I think that's what it's all about whether we get to do it for the record or just for fun.

7. The lovely person who's doing the web site (who sadly had a death in the family and understandably had to put it on hold) has some great ideas for signing up and having those that participate stand out.

If you all have any questions, I'll check on here to answer them as best as I can, but hopefully the "official" site will be up soon. I'm also on dragonconforums.org and the Yahoo groups DragonCon and Debauchery League as scarfyrre (which is my screen name for everything).

I hope this answered some concerns. :)

Oh, yea, forgot to mention this:

All participants will have to sign an agreement with me for GBWR, and must either be over 18 or have your parent or guardian sign for you. IDs will be checked!!

This is per GBWR. Since I'm the "main" person filling all the paperwork out, I have an agreement with them, but I will also need a separate agreement from everyone that participates. That will help with record keeping as well. The husband is a lawyer, so he's helping me with all the legal mumbo-jumbo.

The biggest thing that will help this go off as easily as possible is for you all to know the dance BEFORE the con. I still plan on making myself available during the con up until the event (within reason, of course ;)), and that we are able to have a rehearsal before the actual record attempt. Please check out this site for awesomeness. Thanks!

Also, I can be found in the Drum Circle every night (probably in and out, ask for Lisachu) and will go through parts of the dance with folks. Like Kimber said though, try and learn it ahead of the con. It will make it more fun and easier to get your zombie groove on.

I was already getting together a small Zombie Pirates group that would be randomlly breaking into Thriller throught the hotels. (Jack Sparrow would be playing the part of MJ.) We're doing this Thursday and Friday evenings probably. So, you could probably count us in.

Questions

Date: 2009-07-19 04:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] conslut.livejournal.com
I envision this sought of starting spontaneously out from the crowd like a flash mop (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je1KOcBYGjM); Is this how you envision it? or will it be in a ballroom?

Where and when will it be? How is it coordinated? How will everyone know to start at the same time? Will there be music?

Re: Questions

Date: 2009-07-19 11:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kimberworld.livejournal.com

Since we're attempting a world record with Guinness, it will be wherever D*C can put us so that at least 243 people fit. If D*C sponsors this, it will be an actual event, so it will be on the schedule.

Yes, there will be music :) Depending on the day IF they can help us attempt the record, we hope to have lessons and rehearsals, but everyone that wishes to participate needs to learn the steps at www.thrilltheworld.com/learn. There will be some edits to it, but this will be easier to pull of if everyone learns it on their own. It's really easy how they teach it, and actually a lot of fun to do.

www.thrilltheworld.com/learn

Hopefully I will have more info and a website up soon. Previous posts explain more. :)
