After seeing this post http://www.livejournal.com/community/dragoncon/544830.html, I talked to Gloria at the front desk of the Hyatt about the sign just now. She says she's worked there for 9 years and though bringing in Alcohol is against the state, city, and county liquor license, food and non-alcoholic beverages are fine to bring into the hotel.

To make it even more official, I've spent the last 3 hours searching for any kind of information online, through city, county, and state websites that would back up the food and non-alcoholic beverages ban, but there is nothing to be found.

What I was able to find was that the Hyatt decided to institute its own rules on bringing in food and beverages (though there was no definition to alcoholic and non-alcoholic). I found this same document through a few sites but this seems to be the more official one http://www.inta.org/annual/2004/pdf/exh_guidelines.pdf.

From what I can gather, the "corking fee" is basically you giving the alcohol to the hotel, and them selling it back to you, doing this means they have sold you the alcohol and it is allowed to be stored and consumed on the property.

Just some information to try to help straighten everything out.

Correct...however corking fees can be *outrageous*; and you will not be allowed to consume the beverage any place other that the bar area. My advice, just put it in your bag; and smuggle it up to your room. For the "floor", you can always buy a flask or use another kind of bottle. You can smuggle vodka, gin, white tequila, etc in a a water bottle. Hey, who knows if your coke can has a double shot of Jack in it?

I've been able to smuggle beer into the Hampton without a problem, and neither of the con hotels seems to mind you openly drinking as long as it's outside the building. I've been making inroads towards total insobriety since 8:00am Friday.

If anybody here is interested in forming a hall party, or just getting together to drink, give me a call at 850-212-2876.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the problems they had last year, where people were throwing bottles from the higher floors.

Geez, what the hell kind of convention is this where you're not allowed to have an outrageous room party with lots of alcohol and they don't care how much you bring in?

Dammit!!! I miss my New Orleans and Gulf Coast conventions! And there won't be any for quite some time. I'm sure Coast Con's host hotel was blown away. I might have to settle for A-kon next year.
