Okay this has been a sort of long shot for me everywhere I've looked, but I thought I might post here just to check. Is there a costumer here that can sew with retail leather or knows someone who can?
oh wow.. and here I was hoping for something I could hammer out for a little extra money before DCon. Side note, I heart Stargate.
The corset will probably defeat me, I'm not to that skill yet. Is the whole thing leather? if so, it'd be really expensive, unless you already have the leather handy-if you do, that would solve a world of problems. By retail leather, do you mean upholstery leather? Even if you do already have the leather, the labor alone would be intimidating.
Yeah I realise this costume is seriously labor intensive so I was kinda looking for NEXT Dragon*con already. I just got so disappointed I wasn't able to have the costume done by this year that I am giving myself a year to find someone and have it done.
By retail leather I mean leather that is thin and easier to sew with. Doesn't need to be molded, etc. Can be bought on a bolt.
It is all leather. Corset and coat and neck brace and yeah, not going to be cheap or quick. :/
Try God Save the Queen Fashions (http://godsavethequeenfashions.com/). She's been posting a lot of pictures of leatherwork on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/gstqfashions) lately that fill me with glee. Given her latest Facebook post, I would strongly recommend waiting until after Dragon*Con to email her though.
(As a side note, real leather doesn't come on bolts, but is bought as hides. The stuff that comes on bolts is all imitation vinyl, pleather, that sort of thing. If you want a faux leather costume instead of real leather, it's likely to cost less.)
Thank you for the recommendation! I will definitely go and check her facebook page out and keep your advice at heart, it might be best to contact after, yeah.
Oh, thanks for the correction! I just know I saw something that looked LIKE leather at the fabric store I frequent but I never checked it out too closely to verify if it was or not.
