We stayed at the Holiday Inn on Andrew Young International, which was a tiny hike from the host hotels.

In our three-day experience, we had unsanitary conditions, a shortage of towels, a shortage of respect, and were treated with a generally un-Southern attitude, as though we were idiots. As Dragon*Con veterans, we highly recommend never staying at the Holiday Inn. They do not recognize that there might be multiple guests in the room, and for the clogged sink and lack of towels we had to deal with for close to twelve (12) hours, we were given a wonderful $40 off our parking (or we could have received a generous offer of free breakfast, which most hotels offer anyways).

I would rather stay at the roach motel on Piedmont, the gaming room, or in the Claremont Inn, than stay here.

I decided to make a list of all of our problems with the room for when we need to complain to the corporate office. I shall present the highlights to ya'll.

Someone came to our room at 4:35 in the morning, dressed in street clothes and a Jesus hat. He said he was with housekeeping and that he needed to get into our room regarding a non-existent breaker issue. There was no breaker in our room. We called the front desk and say that someone just came to our room purporting to be housekeeping and they say they'll take care of it. We call again because we don't feel safe. They send security up, and inform us that he actually was a staff member. It was 4:35 a.m., we didn't have a breaker in our room, we didn't call him, and he wasn't wearing any sort of uniform.

The doors of the hotel were supposed to be locked from 11 P.M. on, they never were.

One of the outlets in the room had exposed wires. Not cool.

There's so much more, so very very much more. I've never had such a horrible hotel experience.

Yeah, I'm *seriously* unimpressed with the Holiday Inn. They screwed me over too, this year. Apparently, they booked my room for the weekend BEFORE D-con, but kept it in the room block for the con. Not only did they not have any rooms left for the con itself, but they charged me for the weekend prior. When I spoke to the manager to get the money refunded, he told me he would have to do some "research". I've been unable to get in touch with him since. At this point, I've turned it over to my bank to fight it out. I won't be making another reservation at a Holiday Inn, that's for sure.

Aw, I am so sorry! I hope you get your money back. Were you able to find a room elsewhere?

That was not an Un-southern Attitude. Self important douchebaggery and contempt for everything not from the southern US is about par for the course. I've lived in the south most of my life. For a few short years I was lucky enough to escape to the west and north. I didn't realize how sad the South was until I was able to get out for a while. Never move here, once you're in it's damn hard to escape. The hotel workers were probably just bitter because they too are unable to escape the sadness of being stuck here. (Now I will be flamed and told to move out of the south if I don't like it, and to those trolls I say, send me a few thousand dollars to get set up in a new town and I'm gone.)

Funny how everyone else in the world seems to rave about Southern hospitality and most people love living in the south. Maybe the attitude problem isn't others'.

Consider yourself flamed. I'm too sick with con crud to think and type out a witty, cutting rejoinder.

Shitty customer service, service workers with "don't care" attitudes and all the negative issues are not inherent to the South - they're part of the whole service industry - wherever you go in this country.

We were at the Sheraton - had a good experience all around... would stay there again, without going into details. We used to stay at Amerisuites - good experiences several years in a row. The Marriott last year - great as well.

I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad time. Please do complain to their customer service department coz I can just about bet they do not know about these things and will appreciate knowing that.

Sheraton FTW. They bent over backwards to accommodate our party even though we were not guests.

We will be guests of the Sheraton next year, because this year they were awesome.

I hated the sheraton. small rooms, rooms looked slapped together ( I saw exposed wired for the emergency lights and the wallpaper was torn from poor drilling) and the staff had no clue where the busses were. Waited 2 HOURS for the aquarium bus. With a 3 year old, 6 year old and 11 year old in tow.

The Hyatt was lovely last year.

I stayed at the Days Inn on Spring and while it's not up to par with the Marriott or Hyatt, it wasn't bad. I had a problem with the TV remote not working properly Thursday night and when I called the front desk they sent someone from maintenance right up to exhange the remote. I also got free parking for most of the weekend, I gave up my reservation at the Wyndham to someone else because I could not afford it alone and got a roomshare for Fri-Sun. I was able to reserve a room for Thursday night for myself on a separate reservation and I realized some time after I checked in (and went through DC badge pickup hell) that I had forgot to use my Wyndham rewards card so I stopped at the desk when I went to get my car to go find dinner and when I told the clerk (not the one that checked me in) that I would be staying in the room for the next 3 nights under a different reservation he gave me a parking pass good until Monday, saving me almost $50.

Hotel issues

I love the main host hotels but horror stories abound even about them, so I try to book around 5 miles away, La Quinta for instance, and park in the day lot (by Church) same walking distance as Holiday Inn btw and safe. Also the outer hotels are a lot more accommodating when problems arise.

Hyatt

Just wanted to say that I was VERY impressed with the Hyatt. The customer service at the counter was very friendly. They even had someone helping the line (there were only 3 of us at the time) to see if he could take care of any issues without us having to wait.

I got to keep my cool Dragon*Con keycards, too. (=

The Hyatt has always treated us really well. Any problems that have arisen or mishaps that occur *everywhere*, they've taken care of. This was our 5th year with them. :)

I really enjoy the Hyatt as well.

May move to the Marriott for next year though, seems to be where most of the party that once used to be the Parasol Bar at the Hyatt has moved to. Also, with the Sheraton added last year; the Marriott is just a bit closer.

I believe this is more true now that the Westin has been added.

Moving to the Marriott

Yeah, I think our group may do this, too, just to be closer to the action. Also, there are always people waiting for the elevators at the Hyatt, and I never see that at the Marriott.

I never had any problems. One night the front door was locked, but most nights, there were people coming in and out.

What can I say? I didn't make any requests and didn't deal with any of the staff past check-in. The hotel was strictly for the occasional meal and sleeping. The valet who retrieved my vehicle at checkout didn't help load my luggage, so I didn't tip him.

Sounds to me that you should get a total refund.

Also, you need to write the D*C office and the D*C hotel liaison and alert them to the horribleness of the Holiday Inn, so that they can take it off their overflow list.

Frankly, most Holiday Inns that I have stayed in over the years have been piss-poor at everything. Most of them need renovations stat!

I've stayed in Holiday Inns for SF cons, business trips, SCA indoor events, and family vacations. The customer service is usually lacking, the bar and restaurant staff is woefully lacking, the rooms need a serious cleaning, and, as you say, so much more could be said. :(

Holiday Inns in general aren't places to have cons in. Sure, they have function space, but they never have enough staff to handle a convention. Their function rooms seem to be for groups that meet for a couple hours at a time, and then they are done for the day.

The only hotel/motel that I have ever stayed in that was worse than Holiday Inn is Best Western. There's nothing best about them, unless it's that they are best at being not clean. Ugh.

Here's a tip: [livejournal.com profile] dragonconrooms has a post about the Hyatt, the Hilton, and the Sheraton already taking room reservations for next year's con.
