To whom this may concern...
(I have addressed this issue to Dragon*Con Management and a handful of directors and am yet to get a response. Regarding this issue, keep in mind I dare not speak for the other performing DJs. I can only speak for myself in this matter.)
I was looking at the latest additions to the Dragon*Con 2004 web site and something struck me as being a bit odd. I noticed there is a long, proud list of bands both past and present that have played/will be playing at Dragon*Con. Many musical performers even get their own category in the Guest listings on the home page and on interior pages on the web site. But as I looked further to look up the names of all the DJs who are playing Labor Day Weekend (not for the sake of my own vanity as an artist, but to look for the names of the other DJs that will play on Friday and Saturday). No such listing was to be found. Instead of a full listing of the DJs complete with opertunities to link to their/our biographies, credentials, and contact information (like the web site does with the bands), the most I could find regarding this year's DJs is, "We'll also feature other late-night entertainment, like DJ'd dances, and nightly drum-circle/jam session/dances," tucked far away in a small blurb under the Late-Night (LIVE) Programming. This blurb can be found in three clicks (or more depending the route taken) away from the home page where the Guests and all the other bands are listed.
I was wondering as to why the DJs (such as myself and the two others hired for the Main Programming Dragon*Dances) are not listed by name in the Official Dragon*Con web site nor the program? Why are the DJs who play at Dragon*Con not given the same acclaim, advertising, or general listings as the rest of the "Musical Guests"? What causes this seperation? What exactly qualifies a band or other musical performer to gain a listing (Guest or otherwise) on the Dragon*Con publications? Have the DJs been purposely omitted from the web site and other public Dragon*Con notices - and if so, why?
Personally speaking, I have the same following the rest of the bands have. I have as much experience (if not more experience, in some cases) in playing outside venues as the bands do. I have independently released CDs and merchandise to sell and give away to the people who attend my shows - just like the bands do. I custom tailor my shows to the Dragon*Con crowd - just as the bands do. The only difference I can see is, I can play multiple genres of music in one setting. DJs of my calibur - and others like me who were appointed to the Main Programming - (contrary to popular belief) are musicians too. DJs work equally as hard as the bands to entertain Dragon*Con's attendees and staff alike.
All I am asking for is equal treatment for myself (and those in the future to whom this applies) that you would normally give any other musical act and/or producer. I believe this to be a misunderstanding or a miscommunication somewhere that can easily be resolved.
If there is anyone who can offer some insight on this matter, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
