I've looked into flying down, and the prices are ridiculously expensive, so this year I am planning on driving from Omaha to the con.

I'll be arriving in Atlanta on Thursday, leaving Tuesday.

Is there anyone planning on coming who would like to ride along and chip in on gas?

What are you driving (i.e. how much room do you have)? I know several people coming from KC who may be interested, depending on space for costumes & bodies.

I'm planning on driving from Denver to Atlanta. I pass through Kansas City on I-70. I haul a trailer because I've more costumes than I can fit in my SUV, but it's 80% empty.

Interested?

I-80 is quite a bit farther north... as it is, KC is already an 8 hour drive from Denver. I've currently got two others probably riding with me from Colorado, and if we added hours to our drive, I think they'd probably kill me.

Current plan is to arrive middday Thursday (to do so, we leave Denver Wednesday morning) and leave Tuesday morning from Atlanta.

Wow I didn't know there were ANY cool sci fi people in the KC area. I thought I was so alone in my geekyness. If my job hunting pans out, I'd love to hitch a ride. Course then I'd need to find a place to crash for the night, have money for tix, blah blah blah. But keep me on the tentative list. I went last year and loved it, would love to go again....

And I love it! It's so great to know I'm not alone in being a complete and utter geek. It's a grand and wonderful thing. Embrace the geeks!!!

Probably depends on your definition of cool :P but there are plenty of DC people in the KC area. I'm in Lawrence, and I have at least one DC friend who's from Overland Park that I only ever get to see at DC, even though we live less than an hour apart. Icky schedules!

I of course use the word "cool" purely in jest. Pretty much everyone is cool to me, unless you're a complete and total douche and you have to work pretty hard to be one of those. I'm up in Leavenworth so I completely understand how hard it can be to see friends living in the OP or in KC, I have a a heck a time seeing them. I'm really hoping my job prospects pan out for me, knowing there are plenty of local folks heading to DC makes me want to go even more!!

I can introduce you to lots more cool Sci Fi people if you're coming to ConQuest next month!

It's Kansas City's sci fi convention. More literary than D*C, and much smaller, but still fun :D

I have a concert I am attending that weekend on Friday, but maybe I could do Saturday, it's a little to early to tell. Is there going to be any sort of LJ meetup? I'm always up for those and meeting new people, making new crazy friends. The more the merrier!

Wasn't there a push last year to start up regional D*C communities? Sounds like we need a KCMO or MO/KS one!

I just got a $200 hotel room in Chicago for $70. I can't recommend these guys enough.

Do you use priceline a lot? If so, I'm wondering how it's been for you. I just used it for the first time in March for a trip to Chicago. We got a room at the Drake for $89... and I'm pretty sure we got stuck with the extra-crappy room they won't sell to anyone but their super cheap priceline customers (from the floorplan, it was clearly the smallest room on the floor, the thermostat didn't work, there were no sheets on the bed, which was a queen & not a king like had requested, and it was right next to the elevators). It was the worst hotel experience of my life. When we called to complain we were told we could pay a fee to upgrade to a *standard* king room... as if I was going to give them any more money, we already paid an extra $20 to check in an hour early.

Er, sorry for the hijack, I'm just wondering if I just had really crappy luck, or if my experience was typical. It seems like priceline has the best deals but I don't want a repeat of that experience! (And for the record, we were super nice & polite to the front desk guy, who was super nice to us until he pulled up our reservation and then suddenly cooled off about a hundred degrees).

I started using it because of Dragoncon

and have never had any bad luck. We've used it for the past 4 years. Now I use it for family trips and car rentals when I need one. This year we got some damn nice hotels for $60, and the hotel we're staying in on Thursday night in Buckhead (I gave up on the whole get-my-badge-on-thursday thing) was only $25 .. and it's a nice hotel.

But, you can't back out. I've just run into some people over the years who say they can't make dragoncon because they're spending so much on hotel rooms and you really can play it cheap.

We used it a lot for vacations last year and had 90% good luck. The one time it failed dramatically, we were checking into a hotel late and the clerk couldn't access the automated reservation system, so we had to prepay full rate and then be reimbursed/credited in the morning when the system was available. We didn't know exactly what town we would be sleeping in (it was a mid-trip stop), so if you avoid that it's pretty solid.

Just an FYI, we drive from Florida every year.

I find that a road trip is so much more fun than a flight. Hit the highway, rest when you want to, eat when you want to etc. With flights you are 'in their hands' and there is always the possiblility of delay.

We drive down and stay the night in hotel, then hit the road the next day after rush hour- it's a breeze.
