Hi everyone! One of my friends is thinking about coming to D*C this year and looking to stay at one of the overflow hotels. She specifically mentioned the Days Inn on Spring Street, but overall, she's looking for somewhere safe and relatively close. Any advice or anecdotes would be very helpful.

The Best Western was pretty close (one block from Hyatt). I stayed there two years ago and it felt safer at night than walking to the Sheraton last year.

There are a few overflow-specific stories here (http://community.livejournal.com/dragonconrooms/83675.html), or there's the really big dragoncon (http://community.livejournal.com/dragoncon/1823040.html) review thread here (http://community.livejournal.com/dragoncon/1823040.html).

I've stayed at the Baymont a few years ago. It's a block down and two or three blocks over from the Hilton, I believe. Walking back at night wasn't a hassle, but I am leary of doing it, especially with a small child now in tow. We had a reservation at the Day's Inn, but I cancelled it when I was able to snag a room at the Hyatt just for convenience and security.

You could stay at a host hotel just as cheap!

This is sort of a gamble, but I used Hotwire to book my site- you have to pre-pay and it's a blind reservation (they don't tell you the name of the hotel until after you pay) but the savings are substantial. In January I booked at the Baymont for $59/ night. I believe the current 3 1/2 star down town hotel for $109 a night is the Hilton. There are sites out there to help you decipher which Hotel you're booking. http://www.betterbidding.com/ helped me, but the star ratings and such are somewhat outdated. Hope this helps someone find a good deal!

I stayed at the Holiday Inn my first con...not too bad, even with construction goin on next door. Soft beds, and downhill from the con, so stumbling back at swearwordmumble in the morning wasn't so difficult. 4 blocks away from the con.

That said, I've got me a room in the Marriott this year. :P

I've stayed at the Best Western and the Baymont in the past. Both were reasonably priced, only a short walk and had a good breakfast included. Our only complaint about the BW was that its garage was quickly full and we had to find street parking in 2006--we even arrived late Fri in 2007 and still got into the Baymont/Wyndham garage.

I do know that the DC rate is already gone at the Baymont however.

One thing to remember,

ou're staying in a downtown area. Having attended D*C several times, staying at the hotel thrice, I think, and having come out of the office complex 750' from the Hyatt at 2AM to go home (several times - I used to work in the Peacthree Center complex), my concern is for the safety of anyone at that time of night. That being said, there's a Wyndham, the Peachtree Westin, several others.
