I apologize if this was ever addressed before, but I haven't see it mentioned at this point:
Dragon*Con is replaying a good deal of its high-profile panels this year at different times so that we can make sure to maximize our con-going experience. For this I applaud them greatly.
However, I have a question that hopefully somebody on staff can answer for me (perhaps even the DC*TV people can address this): If these panels are being recorded for rebroadcast, will they eventually be available for purchase/download/etc. during or after the con? I ask, because even with the replays, I'm STILL bogged down with soooo many good panels this year. Thus, I am hoping I can alleviate some pressure by skipping over some panels I know I can view at a later date.
I have seen some tracks occasionally do this in the past, so I am assuming it's not entirely against D*C policy nor something totally objected to by the guests.
If it just turns out that D*C hasn't considered it, I would greatly encourage them looking into it, as it may become another viable source of income.
Thanks for any information!

Date: 2008-08-22 03:50 am (UTC)The problem I would see is the demand for individual panels versus the time it would take to catalog and offer those panels for sale. Videography ends up with dozens of recorded panels, and it's not feasible to stock them in the store like we do with the other DVDs. Orders would need to be done on demand.
Even if the panels were offered individually, the list would be available after the convention ... not before. The convention lineup and broadcast schedule are subject to change, so we can't guarantee what will really be presented or recorded until after it's actually on tape/DVD.
The real question - would enough people buy these events to make it worth the effort? What's the actual demand?

Date: 2008-08-22 01:06 pm (UTC)I obviously oversimplified the situation. I had thought that all that needed to be done in this scenario was to take the panels already pre-labeled in the program as being replayed, stick them on some DVDs, and then offer them as a set after the Con to anybody who wanted to catch up on something they missed (i.e. "Dragon*Con Replays 2008). I wasn't really thinking in terms of individual panels, but certainly understand the logistical nightmares that arise if that were to be done.
I defer to your judgment and appreciate the response.
Perhaps the DC community as a whole should look into sharing panel videos like they do their con photos every year. Youtube would certainly make it easier. I'll have to bring that after the con's over with!

Date: 2008-08-22 10:40 pm (UTC)I understand they wouldn't be available until after the con ~ I'm cool with that, but the option of getting them some tangible way other than being in a host hotel room watching at the time they are broadcast is really good business sense and something I hope DCTV looks into.
