I've been talking to the one who's been handling booking (Andrew) and so far he's heard nothing (well, since I talked to him last week, anyway). Like disbandedtoastr said, usually they've been booked at the last minute, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case again. Anyhoo I'll give him a call tomorrow and ask if he's heard anything yet, I still need to tell him that my own band made it in.
I can only note that there are a lot of comedy bands who applied, but are not being booked. It seems to be a part of the "strategic limitation of entertainment" policy for this year, such as the killing of the Brit Track "Whose Line Is It Anyway" events, one of their most popular.
But I'll bet the three-chord death metal bands, that bring in all those teenyboppers for their shows, are having no trouble getting booked.
I sure hope there can be a limit on the volume at which any bands can play their music at in the band area this year. Last year it was migraine-inducing just to pass through on the way to the programming in the rooms near there.
Also, I would like to see the Brobdingnagian Bards perform at DragonCon. What's more, I'd love to see a variety of other comedy, filk, Celtic, and other types of music accepted to perform there! My favorites include the Bards, Boogie Knights, Three Quarter Ale, The Lost Boys.... and many more!
Who else remembers the Dr. Demento show being hosted at con? That had to be fantastic publicity for the convention, and great for all the bands involved.
I really hope they control the limits on loud music. Not to sound like a granny but its annoying to try and pass by a area when its blasting music so loud you cant hear ppl in your own group.
Who remembers? I do! I had tried for two years to bring Luke Ski, a guy I had only heard on a CD I bought sight unseen, to the con. Someplace in my hovel is a videotape of Luke and Another Guy doing Luke's song "Peter Parker."
Right after that, Luke did a "greatest hits" concert with Another Guy and the wonderful Carrie Dahlby.
(The reason I say "Another Guy" is that he later turned on Luke, who had tried to help him in his career, and has been an absolute bastard to the comedy music scene ever since. Best not to publicize him.)
And this year, Luke was supposed to host the Comedy Music/Filk/Dementia track. He didn't get an invite. There will be very LITTLE comedy music, and none of it organized. I'm very bitter about this, since I worked hard to sell CD's for these guys and help their concerts. They have lots more talent and entertainment value than the eardrum-breakers you mentioned.
I'd suggest looking into scheduling some daytime events on the tenth floor of the Marriott; it's a largely unused space that seems to be free for parties and informal gatherings of all kinds.
I'd be happy to attend a 'private' room concert (and pay for the privilege). The state of filk at D*C is pretty sad this year. Will you be there so we can pick up music even if you aren't booked?
Thanks for the update; I was wondering if that was misinformation, and it's good to know for sure. :-) I couldn't see you guys turning down a bona fide offer to be a track director, given how much everyone has to do!
"I sure hope there can be a limit on the volume at which any bands can play their music at in the band area..."
Agreed! I've spent my whole life listening to loud rock'n'roll and guns, and I couldn't stand being in that area for more than a few seconds.
I, too, would love to see some of the bads you mention at D*C. Especially The Lost Boys. Unfortunately they're booked for a renfest somewhere starting the same time as D*C.

Ditto that. I LOVE most of the bands there, but listening to all my favorites *all at the same time* at ear-splitting volumes is not my cup of tea. It's difficult to carry on conversations with band members when you are getting things signed if you can't even hear them talking. =/
exactly how I feel. I finally get my friend to agree to go to a bard show at D*C... and now they gotta come. Plus it wont be D*C without the bards ;_; I missed Icon the last 2 yrs so D*C is my only other place I can see them live. *wibbles*
I'm a very desirable demographic who will NOT listen to what's on the site now...Celtic/filk/funny human stuff, please, or I'll just take my Firefly drag and go home...
You're dragging me to see them if they're there, aren't you?
*sigh*
I suppose it's only fair...I did force you to see The Lost Boys last year. BTW, how's your hearing? Recovered from the heavy metal version of 'Old Dunn Cow' yet? *gryn*
>_> Believe me Leiko... after one song you wont feel like u were "dragged" so see the bards :D My friends in NY took me to see the bards back in 2005 at Icon and Ive been addicted ever since. >_> We also saw Emerald Rose at the same con, only problem was Emerald Rose played the same 7-12 songs every single set they had. The bards play _alot_ of diffrent songs besides the few fans always crave for.
Kilts are good. Bands in kilts will always gain my interest. Let's hope these Bards of yours keep that interest. I have to admit that while I like Emerald Rose, i'd rather listen to a CD that see the band live. They get monotonous and i've only seen 'em a handful of times.
And my hearing seems to have come back finally. @_@ though thurs night @ D*C last yr I could hardly hear after the lost boys. Maybe sitting so close wasnt a wise decision when a band has a plathera of amps and speakers.
Could the state of filking have anything to do with the fact that Tom Smith had an accident and is laid up? In the past, hasn't he had a hand in running the filk track?

Tomorrow, I hope to find out if Andrew will be coming to the Con as well. Still uncertain so stay tuned.
