I'd really like to have a costume for Dragon*Con that's someone recognizeable. Unfortunately, flying in from another continent and looking like I do, I have a few problems. I need a costume that involves a few, unbulky items and which goes with what I look like (main problem is the beard).

Now, I do have one costume that is not only light, but instantly recognizeable and which I wore for Halloween last year:

Photobucket
(Ignore the German flag, it came off for the final outfit)

But it just don't feel right for a sci-fi and fantasy convention and I see a much greater potential for offending someone over your way than here in Denmark.

I don't know if it'd be appropriate for a Sci Fi con, but damn, I love it.

Alternate History Castro that took over Florida. Cuban shock troops took Miami when the nation was watching the JFK funeral...

I see lots of awesome non-sci-fi and fantasy costumes, and I'm sure Castro has shown up in at least some costumes. If you enjoy it, wear it!

I vaguely recall there being some furor over someone portraying SS troops a year or so back, but other than that, I can't see why it would be a problem! You aren't toting a swastika around or anything. There are lots of alternative universe stories and movies that might help you out.

i don't see a problem with it - there was a guy either last year or the year before dressed as saddaam hussein and holding a sign that said "will work for bombs" or something. i thought it was hilareous, but that's just me.

Costumes that come to mind:

Vultan of the Hawk People from the 80s Flash Gordon

Hans Zarkoff from the same.

Maximilian Arturo from Sliders

One of the Asgardian Warriors Three

Ghost of Christmas Present

nope, "zombie Castro" is just too real to do for a scifi/fantasy con. ;-)

But he's alive! He is! Some nameless Cuban press rep told me so!

I agree with "zombie Castro"; I also think the "regular" Castro would work (or maybe a sign that says something along the lines of "I'm just another Castro brother!"); and you certainly WOULD do justice to the Vultan, though that may take more costuming than you want. Ghost of Christmas Past, you could get away with a dark green robe, faux white fur trimmed, and holding an oversize mug or tankard. A couple of baby dolls, large enough to velcro around your legs, could stand for the children underneath the Ghost's robe (their names were "Ignorance" and "Want", if I recall correctly).
Depends, of course, on how elaborate you want to go...and lots of D*C folks would get the Dickens reference!

I actually have a pattern that matches the robe of Christmas past. Since I'm currently out of work, I'll definitely take commissions :D

Hell if I've seen a very hairy Wonder Woman, Cookie Monster in a toga, and a guy in a banana suit? No reason why Castro wouldn't fit right in. :D

Aw! Someone beat me to Zombie Castro. :( I do like the idea of Max Arturo (but have had a middling-size crush on John Rhys-Davies since "Raiders of the Lost Ark" *G*); Rubeus Hagrid? Need a big coat and a rucksack and maybe a faux crossbow, and certainly notm uch else...
