You know, I came across some discussion regarding internet access at the Marriott, and wanted to put a bug in everyone's ear that if you're staying there (or even going to just be there a lot) there is a less expensive internet alternative than using the regular $12.95 per day service.

Rather than do that, you could sign up prior to D*C for internet access via Boingo, which offers a few different plans, depending on what type of device you're using:

Laptop only:  $9.95/month
Mobile Wifi device (iphone, ipod Touch, etc.):  $7.95/month
Wi-Fi Combo (laptop AND smartphone/mobile wifi device): $17.90/month

You get the wired access in the room as part of this plan, as well as the wi-fi in public areas.  There's no contract, and you can cancel anytime you want.  I figure even for people only there for a day, you're still going to save money, so just wanted to pass that along.  I don't believe any of the other host hotel sites offer Boingo access besides the Marriott Marquis yet, but I'll post if I hear about expansions to any of the other host or overflow hotels.  (They list that the Wyndham Garden Hotel as also being on Boingo, but if I recall they recently got sold off.  Feel free to comment and let me know if I'm wrong on that.)

ETA:  Since a commenter brought it up below, I'll also mention that it appears that there is Boingo service at pretty much every major airport in the U.S. (no,  haven't checked every single one, but it sure looks like it), and a heck of a lot of them internationally as well.  So, you could also use the service on your way to and from thecon if you're flying in!  Woo hoo!

ETA2: Thought I would add some comments regarding my post D*C experience using Boingo.  While some had commented they had issues in past years, I have to say that my Boingo experience was pretty ideal all around!  I was able to use WiFi internet access via Boingo all weekend from my room on both my netbook and my iPod Touch.  Generally, when you first login, you would need to login as follows:

1. Connect to the "ibahn" wireless network on your laptop or mobile device. (Or plug in the wired connection in your room).
2. Open your browser which should automatically pop up with the Marriott's internet page.
3. Choose the "partner" selection on the right hand side of the page (left side is for daily access through the Marriott's plan at $12.95 a day....this is not what you want).
4. Select Boingo as the partner, and then enter your login ID and password.

You should only have to do these steps once.  Then, you just connect as normal using your Boingo software app on your laptop or mobile device.  You may have to re-connect periodically using your Boingo application software, as it does log you out if you remain inactive for awhile.

Hi There, DC's cheap hotel Klingon here.  As it gets closer to con I know we're all starting to get excited and make preparations.   To help my fellow con-goers out, I just posted a long article on how to save money at con.  It's on my journal here - http://xiandesi.livejournal.com/ .  It's full of useful tips for those who need to cut costs but still have a great con.  I also still have lists of available hotels for those who are still looking (It's my blog's primary purpose).
[identity profile] xiandesi.livejournal.com
If you're still looking for a room, it's a good time to check out my journal - http://xiandesi.livejournal.com/ Dragoncon's Cheap Hotel Klingon.  I've got details on how to get the Westin (overflow 2 blocks down from the Hyatt) for $64/night (thanks to a sale at Hotwire), and the Hilton for 200/night.  You don't need to settle for airport or MARTA hotels just yet :).

If you're looking for roommates go check out dragonconrooms here on livejournal, it's also an excellent resource.

If you're staying at the Hyatt, there's also details there on how to get free upgrades and free internet.  I'm also still looking for hotel reviews to add to my review section, and welcome submissions of DC hotel experiences.
Reviews here- http://xiandesi.livejournal.com/8801.html

For those flying in, the airlines have started the annual price wars.
They generally go for about 2 to 3 weeks, and give some great discounts

x posted to DC rooms

I'm the Dragon*con Cheap Hotel Klingon.  I usually post cheap or available hotel deals on my journal for those who don't want to pay full price for their hotel, or just plain don't have rooms yet.  Today I'm also a bearer of good news for those staying at the Hyatt.

If you're staying at the Hyatt this year, you can get free upgrades and free internet access.  Details are on my journal if you're interested.  There's also older entries with DC hotel deals (The Westin for $65/night, Days Inn still available for $100/night), DC hotel reviews, and DC hotel FAQs.  Drop on by if you're curious!

I'm also still looking for more hotel reviews for my Dragoncon hotel reviews section here - http://xiandesi.livejournal.com/8801.html

Any of the regulars probably know who I am talking about. A friend of mine, Brian, is also known by the Psuedonym IK the Troll.

As in... THIS GUY!!

He's a veteran of a lifetime spent in Renfaires, carnivals and conventions. Recently he's hit some REALLY rough times. A major part of this is from his own generosity in opening his home to an overlarge group of forum members attending Dragoncon in Atlanta. Dragoncon can only be experienced, not explained in any effective way. He MADE SURE a large part of our 25+ strong gaggle of internet geeks got together for the first time. He opened his house to what was truthfully strangers, without question.

This happened despite his father falling gravely ill 2 days before the con. None of us would have blamed him for closing his doors when his father passed away. He still acted like the true friend he is, and made sure everyone had the time of thier lives.

Just yesterday he not only got notification that his unemployment was (falsely) being cut off, his second mortgage went into default over an error of $8!! I just can't stand still while a good man gets beat on like that. I've built a website and am collecting my own items to auction off, and that of Brian's other friends. I am looking for artists interested in donating art for the save the Troll fund. If you have some things you want to put up on Ebay, or have a few dollars you could part with, it would be FANTASTIC!

The website is live, the Paypal donation buttons are ready. In the coming weeks we will feature donated artwork for auction, post galleries of pictures, filk songs, tell stories and have fun. Please consider helping someone who REALLY deserves it.

Ldies and Gentlemen..
Would you very kindly click on the link below, and...

SAVE THE TROLL!!

Hey I'm spending tonight putting change into those little paper wrappers my bank insists on me using to deposit coins and shaking out all my old purses, so far I've found an astounding $94.83.  I'm also putting the finishing touches on my costumes.  What are you all up to in the final hours to the con?  Scrambling for money like me?  Or are you one of those finacially secure, well planned, non-procrastinating bastards I'm beginning to hate?

If you are like me, may I suggest the sofa cushions, I found $4.17 there.

Especially helpful for the newbies?

1. What are your best budget tips for Dragoncon that you have personally utilized?

2. What have YOU found to be the best thing to boost your immune system?

Discuss :)

edit: Just FYI.. I'm looking for more of your PERSONAL experiences, not just the usual FAQ rhetoric everyone has heard. For example, I've heard grapefruit extract is a great immune system booster, and heard that Airborne is crap. Or like my personal budget tip is the ramen & soup in the coffee pot budget tip... things of that sort.

Three things I haven't seen mentioned here yet that might be of interest:

First: On Saturday, September 5th, 99X is staging a free concert in Centennial Olympic Park with Collective Soul and Drivin n' Cryin. Centennial Park, for those who don't know, is a handful of blocks away from the con hotels, and adjacent to the Aquarium, so be expecting increased foot traffic and suckier-than-usual parking; and hey, if you're a Collective Soul fan, well now you know.

Second: If you're looking for additional dining options while at the con, you might want to make note of two Atlanta services: Zifty (zifty.com) and Foodler (foodler.com). Between the two of them, they offer a range of restaurant menus and (in Zifty's case) some incidentals, which can be delivered right to your hotel room. Expense varies from typical-Chinese-takeout to decidedly-upscale, but the selection and convenience of delivery make them worth mentioning. (This is not in any way a paid endorsement; I'm just a satisfied customer.)

Third: If you're coming from an area that's served by Clear WiMax? Congratulations; we have it here, too. Bring your modem and save yourself $15/day on hotel internet fees.

Hope this stuff is useful to someone somewhere.

I'm driving from Colorado Springs to DragonCon, and I admit, I don't trust the airlines with my costumes & luggage. so, here's an option if you're like me. )

We just got out thursday hotel so now we're all set for 'con.

Thursday night we are staying in Buckhead, Friday in midtown within walking distance to the Marriot and 1/2 block from a Marta station. Our hotel in Buckhead is a Courtyard Atlanta 3-star that we got for $28.

Total price Thursday-Monday was $261.36, split 4 ways that comes to around $65 per person for the entire convention. We used Priceline and lowballed them for a few weeks until someone took us up on what we wanted.

So, if you're worried about forking over a ton and don't mind staying a little bit away I would seriously consider giving priceline a shot. You can select the geographical area you want (for the convention we select downtown, midtown).

We save a ton. More to spend in the dealers room for me and it allows one or two of us to go period who couldnt afford the expensive seats.

Here's an article some of you may appreciate. If you've been attending conventions for a long time, I'm sure you remember the days when they were pretty darn cheap to go to. Not so much anymore, am I right? If you've never attended Dragon*con, you may wonder how much you need to save up. Here's an article with a price breakdown of two conventions (one large and one small), and how much it costs to attend them. The large convention used in the article is Dragon*con.

So I just bought my pre-reg.Woo one less thing on my September plate of plans. Anywho I have been price shopping on airfare since November 2008. Flights did go down once 2010 rolled in, but still pretty high. I have looked at Delta, US Airways, United Airways, etc. Right now Delta is the cheapest and one of the few with non stop flights. I'm not surprised about this since both Salt Lake Utah (where i reside) and ATL are hubs for the airline. Though, they are still quite  spendy.

Right now I am looking at $530.00 after taxes, but before luggage fees. if I recall correctly Delta charges $15 for the 1st bag. I'm only checking in one bag.  Anyone have some tips for finding cheaper flights. By chance do  any lifers who fly, recall any months that Delta tends to lower prices briefly? I'm not looking for a giant drop in price, but it be awesome if I could get to to be 400.00 after taxes/before lugge fees.  I'll be purchasing my airfare most likely by the end of March at the latest, no matter what the fee. Just looking for any suggestions or info that may be helpful. Thanks.

Okay so after an exhaustive search and a couple of failed attempts (the earlier hint to try lastminutetravel.com did NOT get us a room), my husband and I just reserved a room at the Hilton through AAA. Not an awesome rate, but at  about $160/night it seemed liked the cheapest host hotel rate we would find.
One problem though: I just read through the Terms and Conditions (that my husband supposedly read before agreeing to them) and it actually says that the rates cannot be used by groups or individuals attending conventions.
My questions: How would they know? Does D*C provide the hotels with a list of all 40,000 people attending the con so that they can cross reference? Has anyone else ever reserved through AAA/ATI? Any problems?
I was so excited and now I am freaking out!

For 2008, the decision to go to Dragon Con was last minute, and since I am not a frequent flyer, I checked Orbitz and got a fair deal. But I was wondering if you guys had cheap ticket experiences I can learn from. I am open to any advice in regards to when to buy plane tickets and where to buy them from. Also, please add who your favorite flight provider is. I usually fly Delta when I do fly, and I've had pretty good experiences with them (especially the newer style planes with t.v.s in the back of the seats!)

so, what are the things that people tend to forget to pack for a con? :D any suggestions?
