I'm on staff and actually haven't made it to a lot of programming in the last few years.

So, I have a question: Do they allow you to save seats for someone who might not get there until minutes before the panel begins? I'm thinking here the Firefly stuff, 'cause that's what I'm going to be doing my gorram darnedest to make.

Thanks.

I don't know that they let you, but I can tell you (and not that I would blame you for trying) but the other people who have arrived at the panel 2 hours beforehand and are in line behind you are not going to be pleased to perhaps loose the last seat for someone who didn't wait like they did.

Just my .02, I don't know the official policy.

Yes but without a volunteer staff DCon wouldn't run. I would hope that someone would take that into consideration as it is incredibly important for us to work and if we want to go to 1 or 2 events we dont' exactly have a whole section for staffers or anything.

I dont have the absolute final answer, but its pretty close, and my answer would be unfortunately no. Especially when it says in our volenteer packets that we get no special treatment above and beyond what everyone else gets.

That being said, yes most of us do a LOT of work, and most if it is not appreciated (especially in the "evil and horrible Security Dept") but believe me, I do completely appreciate your department and your hard work.

If there's seats after they let the line in, I can't see there being any issue. I just can't imagine with any of the Firefly stuff this year there'll be any seats.

I'm just an attendee, but I can tell you that for the BHPS, no. I wouldn't get in line the year before last (they ran the line outside through the smoking section! Even I wasn't pregnant at the time, I'm not standing in smoking) and we had friends that got in and they couldn't save seats. :(

they entire outdoors is a smoking section - it's not like we had a choice

I know. And I wasn't blaming you. In fact, I think it was security guys who were routing it, not Buffy staff. Still, though..not standing in smoking. I'll just have to miss it. However, this year it's where registration was, right? I don't know how the line situation will be or where there is to go, but for registration, they queued it upstairs before the escalators. It still went outside, but not in a designated smoking section, so hopefully this year, all will be cool. I can hope, right? :-D

maybe we will get lucky and there won't be smoking right outside every door. I don't mind smoking sections I just don't like them right at the exit.

Talk with your Director. If there is a certain panel you really want to attend, they might be able to work with you so you can make it on time. Especially if you can let them know now. Might not be possible, but always worth checking on.

To answer your question - no. Talk to your track director and adjust your working schedule accordingly.

I'm a track director and still have to wait in line if it's not my event.

It really depends on what panel and how crowded the room is. In the track rooms, if it is a popular panel, probably not. In the big ballrooms and in less full rooms, quite possible

Well I had friend save me seats last year with little to no problem, and we're planning on doing that as much as possible this year because we have a few things that are really close together on the schedule. I don't understand people getting mad about it because how the hell do other people know what those coming in a little later were doing. It might have been bloody important. :-p And to me, it's just like saving seats in a movie theater. If you've got the resources, then use 'em. ;-)
