We basically discovered that if we still want to afford DragonCon, we can't spend any money whatsoever on costuming. OUCH! But luckily, I am an avid seamstress with a decent fabric and trim stash...
Corrupted Boromir (for Ted) -- A "What If" costume, if Boromir had succeeded in taking the ring from Frodo. The leather overcoat is done (in pleather); just needs a hem and trim. Found 4 yds of a lovely 60-inch-wide cranberry low-lustre satin in my stash for the long shirt. I have goldtone/clear plastic tube beads for the sleeves and black velvet scraps for the shirt collar, so it looks like I have a project for my lunchbreaks at work... Ted has black renny boots that will have to suffice for footwear. The bracers, however, may be a problem... I have veggie tanned leather for tooling, but there is a quilted soft leather layer underneath, that I so far have no suitable materials for. And chainmail sleeves? Only if we find $40 somewhere. Grr! Ted will likely just wear his black renny belt, so I need a way to add more LOTR details to the costume without breaking my bank. Like, I have the perfect grey fabric for a Fellowship Cloak, and I own the brooch, but I don't know if he should wear it. Can he wear the Witchking sword at con if I make a scabbard and it is peace-tied? Maybe if I make a mock shield to strap to his back, too?
Arwen's Blood Red (AKA Dying) dress -- I used a deep red paisley stretch lace over gold crepe-backed satin for the sleeve tops and collar.
ladyevelyne will now be wearing it, so I am having to add gussets to the insides of the sleeve tops, and an extension that the Venice lace trim will cover. The overdress will have to be black crushed panne'. Of course, the overgown in the films is NOW known to be midnight blue, but I have almost no blue fabric.
An Original Rivendell Elf -- This will be mine. I found some pale dupioni silk in my stash. It's leftover from gores and stuff from another project, but since I am both skinny and short, the cuts worked out for a cross between Arwen's Farewell Dress and Elrond's Salmon Robe. I'm pretty much going to use the embroidery patterns for Elrond, but shape an open rolled collar like Arwen. I have lots of metallic silver soutache and cord, so I will couch that on by machine, then overdye the whole gown to a purple-periwinkle like the Farewell Dress. The bottom of the front opening will curve back like petals, so I'll need either an ankle-length underskirt or petal-layers in another fabric. Haven't figured that part out yet. I own elf-ears from LARPing, so all good. I won't have a circlet, though, unless I maybe braid some of my soldering wire.
Other than my LOTR costumes, I've got 2 Dawn costumes unstarted. Thankfully, all that fabric is bought already. It's just a matter of getting it all sewn up. It's doubtful I'll have any other costumes done in time for con, so I'll probably just wear something gothic and sexy for the rest of the time.
