Marriott reservations for 2013 will open at 9am (I assume eastern) on October 10th.

When the reservation is made, the first night will be charged as a NON-REFUNDABLE deposit.

The name on the reservation cannot be changed.

The credit card used to secure the reservation must match the name on the reservation.

While I do like that it will cut down on people taking up rooms "just in case", for those people like me who can't get through the "no transfer" kills any chance for getting a con rate. It will have to keep rooms from selling out for a long time to make that part of the rule worth it. If cancelled reservations went back into the pool of Dragon Con rates, it would be one thing, but as soon as someone makes one and cancels, that room just goes back to the regular rate.

I agree. Non-refundable would probably take care of the issue for the most part if Marriott would allow for transfers. Knowing that in order to get your deposit back, you'd have to get someone to take the room and pay you would deter frivolous bookings.

It would also allow someone with money to secure a room for someone who doesn't have the deposit amount this soon post-con.

I can see this becoming a mess. I think that with enough pressure, Marriott could put canceled rooms back at the D*C rate though.

I feel like the hotel will still sell out insanely fast. I'd like to be wrong. I have to stay at the Marriott and coming up with a deposit in a few weeks will be tons of fun

I think it will too. I just also think that not everyone who gets a room will end up being able to use it, and people that normally would have been able to get one will have problems affording it (like you mention).

Apparently, this is all from people upselling their booked rooms. In the end, the hotel will make more money from this.

Yeah, this is super depressing. If they would even relent enough to make it so that only half or 75% of the deposit was refundable I would book in a second, but being out of a full night's stay at the Marriott looks like too big a risk for something that will still be ten months away at the time. I would risk $100, but $200 probably won't be happening. I might, but if something came up loosing that deposit might very well be a regret larger than not getting the room if I do go.
