Newbie here, and I have a question... For part of one of my costumes, I was thinking an intergal item to carry would be a big butcher knife, seemingly covered in blood. It would be very dull and kept in my hands alone at all time. I can't think of a phys rep that wouldn't look like utter shit, which is why I was thinking of the real one. Would this be allowed or would I be begging to get kicked out? I know they sell knives and swords and such so I have seen people walking around with such things, but didn't know if that is considered differnt. Thanks in advance and I can't wait to see you all there!!! ♥

That would more than likely be a no, the swords are generaly allowed as they spend most of there time in the scabbards and are "Peace Bond" to keep them from being drawn, and even if it was a dull knife it still would prob be shot down.

Yes...swords and other blades are sold at DragonCon, but carrying one around you usually have to have it "Peace Bonded" (usually meaning securely kept in a sheath or scabbard).

Con costuming ettiquette kinda frowns upon carrying a bladed weapon, whether dull or not, openly in your hand.

Actually, it goes beyond having it in a sheath. It needs to be bound to the sheath so it can't be drawn. It's a way to prevent people from drawing steel in anger.

NOTE: I'm not on Dragon*Con staff or security, just a fellow costumer.

You can pull off some decent looking wooden replicas, particularly if you use good paint. I'm not SURE if wooden blades are allowed unsheathed, but I have seen this done as a pretty good looking alternative. You could even take apart the knife you were going to use, and JUST make the blade out of wood, then screw the handle back together around it. Other possible option would be to peace-bind it on your belt.

Rule#9

http://www.dragoncon.org/policies.htm

Please abide by our weapons policy: All weapons must be non-working and peace bonded. No functioning projectile weapons includes water pistols, silly-string guns, and ping-pong pistols. Bladed weapons must be cased or sheathed at all times. No clowning around or showing off in the common areas. Any weapon used in an offensive manner will be confiscated and rule #7 enforced. We expect you to use good judgment; with your help, we can continue to allow peace-bonded weapons - thanks!

Try painting up something like foam-core or some other light materal. You have to remember that that Atlanta PD and hotel security will be going on the "if it looks real it is real" policy.
