The only drawback to that is if you do a search on Flickr for "DragonCon" and "Dragon*Con" you get different results. Not a big deal but some folks might miss your pictures if they don't think to search on both :)
My pictures go in the relevant groups as well, so they will see them there. I submit tagged photos to a lot more places than just Flickr, and like my tags to be consistent, so no special characters for me.
I've tagged as "Dragon*Con" and "DC10." If you follow the tags, "Dragon*Con" = "DragonCon" = "dragoncon," but that's not true if you're searching. I may add "DC2010" to mine.
The standard is supposed to be both dragoncon and dragoncon2010 (or whatever year it is). Unfortunately there is little consensus, which makes searching a bit of a hassle.
I will suggest that anyone doing a search on Flickr include "-escalator" in the query. Some dude stood next to the escalator in the Marriott and took a million boring photos and posted them all! Must have seemed like a cool idea, but... not really.

Dragon*Con
2010
Those seem to be what most people are doing from what I can tell.
