This year('09) was my fifth Dragon*con, and I've always tried to get my pre-reg application in by the first deadline, so as to get the best price. For next year's con, though...I'm afraid I might have hit a snag. I'm hoping not, but wanted to double-check, and figured someone else might have one or both of the same questions, so...*shrug*

As I'm getting married in January, changing my last name and moving to another state...what would be my best bet as far as membership goes? When I apply for membership do I put the new name on the application even though it won't be my legal name for another two months, or do I put the "old"(current) name on there and then pester someone after it changes?

Also, with the mail thing, I seem to recall that the first round of postcards generally goes out around February? If this is the case, then my address will be changing between when I would normally send in paperwork/payment, and I will most likely not know the new address by that deadline.

If I register pre-wedding will I have to do extra paperwork and pay a transfer fee to change the name my badge is under? Am I better off just waiting and paying the higher price later on? I remember a post this past year about sending in the proper information later on with memberships purchased online, is that something I can do?

Thanks!

As I understand it, the postcard is not necessary to pick up a badge(people lose them, the post office loses them, etc...), it's helpful, but all you really need is a picture ID. Whatever name you register under, just make sure you have the appropriate ID to match. Personally, I'd register under my current name and address, and just hang on to my current driver's license to use as my ID(assuming it's not going to expire.

You could always go to the website and send a question to the Pre-Registration Folk.

D*Con 2009 was our honeymoon so I had similar situation. I registered in May but we got married August 1st. I had my maiden name on the tag for the weekend. I didn't bother to change it. I had a copy of my marriage license on me (I hadn't changed my credit cards over yet, but my driver license was new) so I just offered to show it when they were looking it up in the book. Is your town going to be the same? They seemed more concerned about my address than my last name being different.

You can also call the Dragoncon Office and ask for Chip. He handles the registration so he is the official answer. That being said I would caution about the idea of using your Maiden name ID. Some states require you to surrender your Drivers Liscence as part of getting your new one. Honestly though, they aren't going to know the difference between Jane Doe changing her name to Jane Smith and Jane Doe buying a membership with Jane Smith, so as long as the name on the liscence matches the membership form you should be fine.

Of course one option would be to register with your maiden name and then in the notes section put: "Getting married on wedding date. New name and address is " with the appropriate information.

this happened to us last year, and we registered with the "new" name and everything went fine!

Just an FYI, you can save a bit more if you buy next year's membership at the current con. You do it at the Dragon*Con store. Good luck and grats on your wedding! :)

I would just register with your new name. As long as the ID matches the name on the badge, that's all they care about.

The summer of 2008, I too got married, changed my last name, and moved. My advice is to bring your current driver's license, if you have it, the post card (this would be most helpful...I sorta lost mine last year) and if you can a piece of mail depicting your old name and address you originally registered under.

Also, Reg and Pre-Reg are pretty accepting of photocopies of driver's licenses. So if you use your current name/address, just have a photocopy of your old driver's license, and that should be good enough. I'd guess a current DL with copy of your marriage license would also be accepted.

I was in a similar situation this year. I registered in December, under my old name and address. Changed my name in March, and then moved to another state. I sent the Dragoncon office a letter with my new name and address, and a copy of the court documents showing the name change. A few weeks later I got a new postcard showing the new name and address.

I wouldn't worry about it, but I would email them now to be on the safe side. I pre-reg'd for 2008 and was married and changed my name in between. I sent an email to the office listing my old name, new name, and the address (which remained the same). They took care of it in the system and mailed me a new postcard too with no fees. I imagine you'd be fine doing something similar.

Good luck and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

I moved one year and I forget when maybe 2007. All I did was send an email with my name, badge number, old address, and new address and the card came to the right one.
