---------------------------------

I just got off the phone with a *really* nice and helpful woman with reservations at the Marriott. We talked for about 15 minutes.

1) The D*C block of rooms are not going to be released until 8:00 a.m. EST Thursday, October 1st. Therefore, you cannot make reservations until 8:00 a.m. EST tomorrow morning. The ONLINE CODE, ROOM RATE, and DEPOSIT INFORMATION is not currently available, and will not be available until the room block is released. The agent I spoke flatly said the idea of 100% of the total due as a "deposit" was wrong, as she has NEVER heard of the Marriott doing that.

2) The Marriott's internal e-mail regarding D*C rooms (which she read to me) informs the staff that these rooms are expected to sell out within 24 hours and there will be high call volume regarding these rooms. The block of rooms for D*C sizable (exact amount not known - implied more than last year).

3) The airline convention is BACK for next year (American Airlines, Delta, Northwest) have a convention block booked at the Marriott over Labor Day weekend. That is the only other convention block showing at the hotel besides D*C.

Gaming is a Dragon*Con staple, and has probably been part of the convention for most if not all of it's 23 years to date. But, it was only two years ago that the MMO panel broke out on it's own. I know that last year, a number of the panels were standing room only, with some even being moved to a large ballroom and even almost filling that. This year, the panels also were also very well attended, particularly those that included Felicia Day talking about The Guild. Unfortunately, I did not get to attend every Warcraft-related event, but the ones I did attend were outstanding.  One of the best events of the weekend for all gamers was the live-action questing, sponsored by Questgivers.

I have noticed no one has asked this question.  What was the official paid attendance at Dragon Con 2009?  How is that number arrived at?  Some cons (Anime Expo for example) count a four day attendee as four people attending (turnstile count).  As someone who has run a registration at a con before and am interested in this stuff (will never figure out why), I was wondering these things.

Greetings!

An introduction... My name is James, and I'm new to both LJ and Dragoncon... I'm attending Dragoncon for the first time after being a SDCC vet for 20 years. I'm hoping some kind folks can give me info on the lay of the land, costuming, and meeting some fine new folks at DC... Please leave a comment and help a new guy out!

If so, please head on over to www.dragonconthriller.com and check out the thread for t-shirts being made for those who are the REAL record holders.

Proceeds are going to the Alzheimer's charity D*C sponsored this year.

Thanks!
