a hello with a question

This is going to be my fist time going to dragon*con. I'm typically a HP cosplayer, but I wanted to go with something different for this event, as i'm already planning on doing a HP one.

If it common to go as a character that is not from a specific fandom, but is fanstasy related. Its from one of my own novels that is still stalled on the way to getting published due to editing stuff.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I've never really done an event like this before.  Thanks

http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_location.php#Host_Hotels has rate listed for Hilton, but Hilton says those rates are wrong. Rates I was quoted - $150 for up to 2, $170 for 3, or $190 for 4 people
