Yup, the costuming track schedule is up on the webpage:

http://hometown.aol.com/jester7946/CostumeTrack.html

scroll down to the bottom to see them all.

I'm very excited about my highly requested panels for absolute costume beginners. Ideally, a person interested in starting costuming could go to all three, but if you are interested and can only make one try to come anyway! They are on Friday from 2:30-3:30, Friday 5:30-6:30, and Sunday from 10:00-11:00.

Also, since I'm more of a costumer than a photographer, I'm looking for a few people that have D*C picture banks to let me use some of their pictures in my talks. I will *not* be doing a 'hall of shame', but I do need illustrations of different people at D*C in their costumes. If you're willing please comment with a link!

This will be my first time at Dragon*Con or any convention of this kind. My friend and another con newbie brought up the issue of money. So help me out here, oh experienced ones, how much money do you bring for:

food
merchandise
autographs
other

Any tips on how to scrimp and save? THIS post is great for ideas on saving on food. Are there other areas we can save a few bucks?

Thanks!!

Given the number of posts about saving money at Con, I have a question that might seem a bit ludicrous. Has anyone ever brought their own mini fridge? I know my room didn't have one last year, and it would save me a lot of time (refilling a cooler gets time-consuming).

So, Robert Asprin is cancelling his appearance at Dragon*Con. The official reason is that he's behind on deadline for his new book. However, his agent, Bill Fawcett, and his editor, Susan Allison, and possibly his ex-wife, Lynn Abbey, will be there. So, I may not be the only one pissed off, but I am. Indeed. Pissed off.

An important announcement just occured to me....

Ladies and Gentlemen start your stair climbing practice now!

If you're new to Dragoncon you should be informed that the fastest most efficient way to get anywhere in the con (specifically in the Hyatt) You must learn to climb 2-10 flights of stairs on a regular basis for 4 days. Practice your endurance training while people aren't paying attention at work and walk up and down the stairs twice as many times as necessary before you go somewhere.

The added benefit will be a slimmer you to fit into those corsets and costumes!

So, lots of useful info cycling through as we gear up for con.I was wondering if I could get some input from the costume folks. Any hints, tips, or tricks from the contest vets? Either costume contest, Dawn lookalike, or the Hall contest. Or even wearing non-standard costumes in general. Makeup, what it's like IN the contests...

And yes, I AM writting a book. :) I'm compling all this info, i'll post a link once it's done.

Another thing - this world NEEDS more DC Humor! :)

Wired News A Hacker Games the Hotel
A vulnerability in many hotel television infrared systems can allow a hacker to obtain guests' names and their room numbers from the billing system.
It can also let someone read the e-mail of guests who use web mail through the TV, putting business travelers at risk of corporate espionage. And it can allow an intruder to add or delete charges on a hotel guest's bill or watch pornographic films and other premium content on their hotel TV without paying for it. ...one of the most serious vulnerabilities he found was in the billing system. Hotel guests can use their TV to check their account balance. The bill is tied to the room number, which in turn has a unique address that's assigned to the TV.
Laurie could view the bills of other guests and see their room numbers simply by going to a menu that displayed the address of the TV in his room and changing a number in the address to make the TV think it was in a different room.
"If I change that address -- it was A161 and I've now changed it to A162 -- I'm now looking at the bill of the guy next door," he said.
Laurie could view certain activities of other guests by tuning to other channels or by scanning through all possible channels in the system. That's because when a guest purchases premium content or TV internet access, the hotel system assigns a channel to the guest's room through which to deliver the service. All Laurie had to do was surf the channels.
He produced a slide of his TV screen showing another hotel guest sifting through business proposals in his e-mail.
"He's happily typing away in his room thinking he's privately viewing his e-mail," Laurie said. "But I could be anywhere else in the building watching what's going on (from) the TV. If I was a business rival staying in the same hotel at a conference, I could do a little corporate espionage. I see the (bid) proposal he's putting in and I could go in and put one in that's 10 bucks cheaper."

Too bad i dont think i'll be making it to dcon this year, but if anyone has a chance to "play around", let me know what you find out :)

Yeah - costuming can be elaborate...but I think I have come up with something quick, easy and fun! I present to you...

Artz Parts!

So, here is the idea. We get a bunch of people to be different parts. We will do this one of 2 ways...either everyone goes out buys a white t-shirt and a red sharpie and writes their assigned part on the shirt OR we (which will mean I) will make buttons. The button route will be a pain in my butt, but no one elses but it will require some meeting up to get buttons.

Then - during D*C you try to find all of the other parts. I send everyone their assigned part (if we make our own shirts) and that way will know how many there are, otherwise, well, I know how many buttons I hand out and it is luck of the draw random! Maybe some sort of prize for finding the most parts can happen...will have to check the fundage and idea fountain for that. Also, you will get to meet a bunch of cool LOST fans you might not have otherwise met.

So, is there any interest in this? Yes, no...email me at aabernathy@gmail.com or comment here if you wanna participate and leave which you prefer button or shirt and your suggestion as to which day to wear said "costume" (the joy of buttons will be that you can wear them on regular clothes too ...

oh, yeah, depending on how much it costs me to make buttons there will be some nominal fee involved for each button. Just cause I have to pay for them otherwise and well ... let's face it...the work doesn't pay that well.

The SEBC has just been informed this evening that effective this year, DragonCon does not allow their events to have sponsorships – meaning the Shindig. We have two options with regards to your wonderful Browncoat donations. We can use them to provide better give-away goodies at the booth and the costume contests and future events, as well as have a slightly bigger amount to donate to our charity after the event; or we can provide a refund to you – it is your choice. Please contact isaidso at mindspring dot com if you donated to advise your wishes. Our sincere apologies for this unexpected turn of events.
