First Time Attender

1. How do you see when the panels are?

2. How do you get a membership? We can't get there until Friday night because of work.

1) In a couple of weeks, they'll post the Pocket Program online, and you'll be able to download it and start combing through to see what you're interested in seeing. Typically, someone with the right programs (or knowledge) is usually nice enough to turn the schedule grid into an excel file or google docs file that we can all use to fiddle around with.

2) If you need a membership for the entire weekend, you can pre-register still, but the cost of the membership at this point is at the same cost as what it will be at the door. If you'll be checking in on Friday night, (before 11, I believe, which is typically when registration closes) not sure it matters which way you do it, as the night time registrations (other than Thursday night) aren't usually all that bad. If you'll be checking in Saturday morning instead, some of the folks were saying it is easier to register on site as the line is often easier.

1. As mentioned above, you can wait for the Pocket Program to see everything in one place. It is typically released about a week prior to con. But if you're concerned about a particular fandom, then try checking out the fan track website. The fan tracks are listed on the left side of the main D*C website:

http://dragoncon.org/fan_tracks.php

2. According to D*C Facebook page, these are the times that registration will be open:

Thursday: 4 PM to 11PM
Friday: 8 AM to 11PM
Saturday: 8 AM to 11PM
Sunday: 8 AM to 11PM
Monday: 8 AM to 5 PM

It will be at the Sheraton hotel. The main D*C website also has a listing of how much tickets will cost at the door:

Though the panels will be listed online, you can also pick up the program at the con. Typically one of three places: When you get your badge, at a table as you exit registration, or at the info booth outside of the registration room. I've gotten one at each place. Note, there's two different booklets: A large, color cover book that has guest and general info, and the small, newsprint pocket guide with all the panels listed.

Speaking as a first timer attendee, so which hotel is the best for photo ops with costumers? Marriott? Sheraton? Or the Hilton? I've been told people doesn't allow costumers at the Hyatt...

Marriott is one of the best.

For the last couple of years the Hyatt/DragonCon staff (by decree of the fire marshal I believe) have shut down certain high traffic flow locations of the Hyatt for Photography at certain times for safety concerns which as much as I hate to admit it do make sense. I'm not quite sure what parts of the hotel or what the times are but I do know that to make up for these bans there are specific photo op locations set up in the hotels to accommodate us shutter bugs and attention wh..er..seekers

Costuming is allowed at the Hyatt, but the level where most of the events occur bans photography between certain hours (usually evening) to prevent bottle necking on the escalators/stairs.

As far as I know, you can still catch a few photographs during non-peak times.

The Marriott, however, has more wide open space and costumers tend to collect there.

Please, though, if you are photographing folks in costume, be conscious of what is going on around you. Stay clear of stairs/elevators/escalators. Don't just stop suddenly in the middle of a traffic pattern. If you are going to photograph someone, be polite and ask, and if you can, have them step aside into a place where you will not be blocking movement of the crowd.

I can't stand trying to get off the elevator in the Hyatt and not being able to hop off because the huge crowd of folk taking pictures. Haha.
