Costuming ideas

Hi everyone. I'm getting so excited for Dragon*Con this year. We had such a great time last year. I've got a question. Actually really I just need some costume ideas. I'm drawing a blank. Here's my deal. This year at Dragon*Con I'll be a little over 5 months pregnant and probably showing a bit at that point. Last year I did the slave Leia costume and had so much fun in it, unfortunately I can't wear that this year. Does anyone out there have any ideas for a pregnancy costume? I know I could do Padme but I don't sew and I don't want to have my mom make something that elaborate with such short notice. Is there any thing else out there that would work? Would appreciate any suggestions.

Or Commandant Mele-on Grayza since she had a crazy outfit with her pregancy during the Peacekeepers War.

I enjoyed painting my belly when I was pregnant at Dcon. It can be a lot of fun!

There are quite a few pregnancies throughout BSG that you might be able to represent. There's Tonks in HP that might be a good one that's easily recognizable with a crazy hair color. You could do a season one claire from Lost, although you won't be as massively pregnant as she was supposed to be.

I'll be interested to see any other suggestions since my husband and I are trying for a second pregnancy and it may end up overlapping with D*C next year depending on how things go.

There was also Kira on ST:DS9 and Sydney Bristow on Alias. Also Bella from Breaking Dawn in the Twilight series. Bella would probably be easiest as you could wear normal clothes, but people might not know who you were.

you could do pregnant Gwen from Torchwood.

Rebecca (Reece Withersoon)'s red ballgown from Vanity Fair? You could start with a suitable looking red prom gown (cheap from eBay) and then elaborate on it with the collar & sparkles?

When I was pregnant (almost 9 months!), I had my belly henna's, wore a low-tied sarong to show it off, and put on a pair of wings and went as the safe-sex fairy. I gave out free condoms, and wore a sign saying, "Ask me about the rhythm method!" Got a lot of laughs. :)

LOL, this is awesome.

Are you a Dune fan? A Bene Geserit breeding sister (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bene_Gesserit), or concubine, or whatever she's called, would be a costume that would get you a lot of fans if done right -- and should be recyclable, post-pregnancy, into a priestess costume, I would think.

You could do Juno and walk around with a gallon of Sunny D?

I'm sorry, but I hated that movie... But GOD what a great costume Idea!!!

It's probably too elaborate, but I loved the outfit that Lucy Lawless wore on Xena when "they" were pregnant. :-)

You could do the outfit Padme wore towards the end of the third movie, right before Anakin choked her. It was fairly simple and should be easy to make (and comfortable).

This is totally out of left-field, but I've alwasy thought that a pregnant Spartan woman, with a dress along the lines of Queen Gorgo's dresses, would be an awesome costume.

How about an alien symbiote that is coming out through a shirt? Add some gore and you are set.

[identity profile] ldsman.livejournal.com 2009-07-09 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking more Aliens that SG. If it doesn't creep you out, how about a baby symbiote like the one in Total Recall? My sister is pregnant(first time) and is kinda squeamish about certain pregnancy related things.

If you're an Angel/BtVS fan, Cordelia was pregnant twice on Angel. I don't know how obvious it would be to people. The first time she was preggers (Demon baby) the most memorable outfit was the white robe. The second time she was preggers (Jasmine) she had this interesting belly dancer type outfit. That one would be harder to make.

[identity profile] gothpanda.livejournal.com 2009-07-09 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
oh yeah, that's true, Cordy's destiny was to be impregnated by something supernatural, so it would make sense to go as her. You could put slimy tentacles on your belly popping out of the white robe. That's awesome!

With picture links even...

I did simple and easy during my pregnancy at the con last year. A pregnant pirate, and a pregnant belly dancer. Then one day in "normal" clothes. Whatever you do, just be comfy.

Dress as a nun and have your hubby, beau or other male friend dress as a priest. :D

[identity profile] call-me-sick.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite pregger costume was the girl who just took plain white dress and covered the tummy area with blood and then attached two doll arms so it looked like a monster baby coming out of her. You could also go as a Basketball player and paint your tummy like a basketball. A witch would work to a paint your tummy like a Jack-O-Lantern. Juno is a good idea as well and so is Tonks.
What about going as Professor Trelawney (sp?) from harry potter and paint the tummy like a gi-normous crystal ball? maybe even have Voldemort airbrushed with the ball. I think THAT would get a poop ton of pictures! And if you need an artist I know one would be more than happy to paint Voldie on you.

Are you interested at all in renaissance costuming? If so, I know of a few patterns that look very nice and are made for pregnancy.

On an offhand note, when I went to Archon in 04, there was a VERY pregnant woman in a slave Leia outfit. I commented that I liked that she wore it while preganant and her response was, "Yeah, I'm Leia AFTER that wild night of drinking and partying on Endor..."
