I feel like the hotel will still sell out insanely fast. I'd like to be wrong. I have to stay at the Marriott and coming up with a deposit in a few weeks will be tons of fun

I think it will too. I just also think that not everyone who gets a room will end up being able to use it, and people that normally would have been able to get one will have problems affording it (like you mention).

Apparently, this is all from people upselling their booked rooms. In the end, the hotel will make more money from this.

Yeah, this is super depressing. If they would even relent enough to make it so that only half or 75% of the deposit was refundable I would book in a second, but being out of a full night's stay at the Marriott looks like too big a risk for something that will still be ten months away at the time. I would risk $100, but $200 probably won't be happening. I might, but if something came up loosing that deposit might very well be a regret larger than not getting the room if I do go.
