Westin Location & Scooter/Wheelchair Access

While I was downtown yesterday, I checked out the Westin. It's only about half a block to the right from the MARTA Peachtree Street West entrance on the same side of the street. Just cross Andrew Young International Boulevard and you're there. You can see the Westin sign from the exit to the MARTA station. The Westin entrance on Peachtree Street goes into the sixth floor and is only accesed by steps. If you're in a wheelchair or scooter, you go down the side of the building on Andrew Young. There's a ramp about a half a block down (across the street from Pittypat's Porch) that that takes you into the lobby, which is on the fifth floor. If you come in by the Peachtree Street entrance, you can either take a curved staircase, one of the elevators, or an escalator to go down one floor to the lobby. The escalators are on the opposite end of the building from the Peachtree Street entrance. You walk through the elevator area to get to them. The meeting rooms that D*C uses are on the sixth, seventh and eighth floors.

It was kind of creepy to see the Westin so empty. I also went through the Hyatt, Marriott and Hilton, but there was more activity there. Still really quiet compared to D*C of course!

Checking in to the Westin with a scooter was a total comedy of errors. The valet lot was full, so we had to self-park, and riding the scooter back down and out of the garage was wicked fun. So, we got back to the enterance and our cart and the bellman...who instructed us to take the escalator to the lobby. I asked exactly how I was supposed to do that. He sort of boggled for a minute, then crammed my husband, the scooter, and I into the freight elevator with our luggage cart. Seems like they'd have some sort of...nicer entry for their disabled guests!

Last year, my best friend that was at the con with was in a manual wheelchair. We used the down hill part to get momentum to get up the ramp. That ramp is not so fun to get up in the rain.
