I realize that this has already been discussed in
this thread, but I was was afraid that if I were to post a response to that thread after so many days, it would go largely ignored.
Other than the simple fact that the convention is obviously expanding, I'd like to
respectfully request
that one of the D*Con staff members in this community could go into a
bit more detail about why registration and badge pick-up was moved to
from the main hotel, the Hyatt, to what is essentially a satellite
site, the Hilton.
I have a several concerns as it pertains to this change, most of which
revolve around the sheer logistics of moving such a large amount of
people to what really is a rather remote location.
I worry that the movement of so many people (all Hyatt patrons) across
two
streets along with the Marriott folks who have always had to cross one
street could cause automobile traffic and safety concerns. Keep
in mind that Friday (when most people arrive and are ready to pick up
their badges) is a normal workday. In other words, just because
WE are all off from work, doesn't mean the city of Atlanta isn't abuzz
with heavy, and very dangerous street traffic As we know from
experience over the past few years, there is a lot of foot traffic
crossing the street between the Hyatt and the Marriott either by
overhead walkway or by way of actually crossing the street. There
have been enough safety concerns that Atlanta Metro Police have been
called in to act as crossing guards. Even with the crossing
guards (that as I remember are only there during the daylight hours)
there have been enough close calls that I have witnessed to raise
questions about safety in asking the entire population of the
convention to cross at least one street. Seems like far more of a
liability than necessary.
Second, it causes further accessibility concerns for disabled, injured,
handicapped, or other such convention goers with special needs.
With registration rules being so VERY strict about only presenting a
badge to the person it is assigned to, why would we ask people with
mobility concerns to traverse around or through THREE hotels?
And lastly, considering the sheer length of lines for badge
pickup/registration last year, what is the motivation to cause even
further confusion and pandemonium by moving registration
easily one (and in theory closer to two) city blocks away from the hotel where the largest part of conventioneers are staying?
It simply seems unnecessary when one large programming track could be
moved to the Hilton, making it necessary for only a small percentage of
patrons to go to that hotel.
I'm well aware that in not being a member of staff, I've missed out on
all of the conversation that led to this decision. This is why
I've chosen to ask questions, rather than make an attempt to damn the
Dragon*Con staff or its move in regards to this matter.
Thank You,
Scott G.
