This might be the first time in about 7 years that I will not be attending Dragoncon. Mainly because of the huge crowds (seems worse every year) especially on Saturday. Even the smaller tracks have lines and overcrowded rooms now and the habitrails on Saturday were extremely dangerously crowded to a standstill last year to the point that is just wasn't even worth going out for me.

I was wondering has anything been done to improve the flow and amount of crowding in the hotels. I dont live that far away from Atlanta and might come down for a few days but last year really felt more like work that pleasure and frustration was the main primary emotion of the week. I was really surprised last year because I thought that moving the vendors out of the Marriott would really help. Dragoncon used to be my favorite event of the year and I hope some day it will again. I just cant see spending the money for that much frustration. That being said I hope everyone has and incredible and most importantly a very safe time! :)

Hello everyone! First time DragonCon goer here.

I was wondering if anyone could share their experiences staying at the Holiday Inn Atlanta Capitol Conference Center, and getting to the host hotels?

Much appreciated.

Hey everyone! We are trying to make sure Steam Powered Giraffe gets a slot at Dragon*Con to preform this year. The band has put in a request however this does not guarantee a spot, so to help persuade the Dragon*Con decision makers I have created a petition to let them know we want SPG there.

If you are a fan and want to see them at the Con please consider signing!
If you don't know who they are, check out their music and videos!

Thanks for reading and spread the love!

Now that the dust has settled a bit, this is a follow-up to [livejournal.com profile] zarathud's post on running at Dragon*Con.  I'm curious to see how many people braved the heat, humidity, and hills of Atlanta over the weekend, and who might like to get together to run next year.  While I wasn't able to meet up with anyone through LJ this time around, on Monday morning I asked someone who was heading out for a run if I could join him, so I did get at least one D*Con running partner.

I would head up to Piedmont Park and around midtown Atlanta, doing 4 to 6 miles a day on Thursday, Friday, and Monday (Saturday and Sunday were just too busy, although I know a group of folks runs the parade route before thing kick off).  Doing a half marathon's worth of running over the long weekend is pretty straightforward; it might be a good goal for an informal Dragon*Con running club, maybe even something we could use to benefit a D*C charity.  Thoughts?

I discovered a couple of years ago that, for a single $10 monthly subscription fee that could be turned off at any time, Boingo Wireless would get me online in the hotels and airports I was going to be in for Dragon*Con, where I'd otherwise have to pay separately.

Boingo works in the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, as well as in the Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta Airport and many of the connecting airports I travel through. So, I could pay $78 to the Marriott for six days of Wi-Fi connectivity, plus whatever fees are charged at the Detroit and Atlanta airports during my sojourns there, or I could just pay Boingo $10. Not a tough choice. You should join me. (No, sadly, I don't get any benefit from you signing up from Boingo, other than the warm glow of helping someone save their money for something better than handing it to the Marriott or Hyatt.)

My blog post on the subject: http://upgrd.com/blogs/trebuchet/boingo-saved-bucks.html

Just wondering how many folks who are gamers would be interested in something like a flea market/swap meet for gaming stuff at Dragon Con? Nothing to compete with the dealers. Do it after dealer's hours on Friday night and/or Saturday night for 2-4 hours. Most gamers I know, myself included have loads of old gaming stuff that other folks might be interested in. And loads of other gaming conventions have these. I normally take the money I make from my sales and spend it with the dealers, and so do most of the others I know who do it. What would it take to have something like this in the gaming area at Dragon Con? You could charge a slight fee for tables, which would bring in more money for the Con and  gaming. Have it set up for gaming stuff only....not just general sci-fi/fantasy stuff which would be available in the dealer's room I can't be the only one who attends DC that thinks this would be a cool thing.
Who do I need to talk to about setting something like this up? How do I go about contacting them? And is anyone else interested in something like this?
Thanks!

Let me start out by saying that 2011 was my favorite DragonCon ever (or at least since I started attending in 2007). That said, I do have a few things I’d like to recommend to TPTB that could be improved upon for next year.

--The Walk of Fame…is there any way to have the actors’ prices for autographs posted on the website like they do with the schedule sometime before the con? Other cons do this, so it shouldn’t be too difficult, and it just makes things easier when you’re trying to plan on a budget.

--Walk of Fame, Dealers Rooms, Exhibitor Halls, Art Show, etc…why can’t these all open on Friday morning at 10:00 am? The con itself begins at 10am on Friday morning, and the above mentioned rooms all open at 10am on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, so why not have them open at 10 am time on Friday as well?

--DCTV…I love it! The only thing that needs to be worked on is the sound. It would fluctuate between very loud and very quiet.

All in all though, a great year. I can’t believe it’s just been a week since it ended!
